226 The Souks rffeituall calling s° Chrift. Pfal, i 8 r> a;rfe. mace of love, I could nothingbut worke love; ar;d all too little for that God that bath loved mee fo admirably, fo unmeafurably. What (hall I love if-1 love not the Lord ? I love all things, but I love God above all things. I love thee dearly, 0 Lardmy, jtrength, faith David: this is the laftpar- ticular, whereby the foule comes to bee all on a flame, and bath a burning afFeetion towards the Lord Almighty. We come nowto the applicationof thepoint, that fo wee may reape Tome good to our_foules thereby. First then it is a ground ofinftrudion, which I delire to prefl'e untoyou, becaufe it is both feafonableand profitable. From the former Doctrine thereforewee collect and conclude un- deniably; that there is no fufiiciency in a natu- rail heart, to becarried to the Lord Jefus Chrift, or to the worke of grace : wee have not this,be- fore God cloth give it unto us : nay we cannot move towards God, or be carried in the leaft kind to love or delight in him further than the Lord will carry us himfelfe, andbeareup our hearts by thehand ofhis Spirit. It is true ( and wee finde it by wofull experience) it is in our power to love the world, it is inour power todelight inour lufts: Nay being but natural( men,it cannot be but that we fhould love our felves, and love our ho- nour, and our eafe, and profit, and applaufe in theworld. There is enough ofthis foolifhwild- fire, there is enough of thiscarnali felfe-love in every mans heart. But to love the Lord Jefus Chrift, and to have a heart inlarged with joy to him,
