122 S A B A O T H. in Zion.* ThusfaithJEHOVAH, who giveth the Sunfors a Light by Day, and the Ordinances of the Moon and of the Stars for a Light by Night, which divideth the Sea when the Waves thereof roar ; JEHOVAH SABAOTH is his NAME : If thole Ordinances depart from beforeme, faith JEHOVAH, then the Seed of Ifrael alfo (the Church and chofen of GOD) f1.eall ceafefrom being a Nation (or Peo- ple) before me for_ evert Thusfaith JEHOVAH ; If Hea- ven above can be meafured, and the Foundations of the Earth fearched out beneath, I will alto call of all the Seed ofIfrael, for all that they havedone, faith JEHOVAH. Howjuttly then may every Believer, take up the Words of the Prophet, and fay ; Behold, GOD is my Salvation: Iwill' truft, and not be afraid; for JEHOVAH, even JE' HoVAli, is my Strength andmy Song ; he alfo is become my Salvation ? His Strength lays where it can never be loft. His Salvation is anFfièft of Omnipotence itfelf, which nothing can defeat. And, while he leans not either upon Self or the Creature, no created Power can hurt him. Indeed, as Dr. Sibbes has excellently remarked, " lince the Fall, God will not truft us with our own " Salvation ; but it is both purchafed and kept by Chrift for us, and we for it through a Faith, which is « wrought by the Power of GOD," Chrift is JEHO- VAH to all the Hefts of his Creatures; but, in a pecu liar manner, he is JEHOVAH, full of Grace and of Truth, to the Hefts of his Redeemed. Through the Greatnefs of his Might, and not their own; none of thefe, no, not one, can poflibly fail. * Jer. xxxi. 35, &c. A modern Critic may pofbly condemn, what would them tautological to him in this Declaration ofJehovah; and may fancy, that a Thusfaith yehrvah, at the Beginning, would have been facient, without a Repetition of the fame Phrafe in al- mot} every Line. Indeed, if the 'Text contained a dry Speculation, perhaps his Remark would be jutt': But the Lord, in giving Affur ances of Grace and Salvation, pledges his incommunicable Name in every Promife, to confirm the Faith and Hope of the Heirs of Sal- vation; and thews that his Faithfulnefs, Power and Love, are en-. gaged to make every Line of every Promife good and effeftual to ;heir Souls.
