10. NUMBERS XXI. Gen.5.6, this tong they celebrate the miracle and ntensor of the Well which God gave them : and if they lung it at firft, when they affembled to dig it,it (-hewed alto their faith in the promife of God,who had faid,he would give then water; and fo they fpcake unto the Well (as Mofe1 was bidden fpeake to the Roche, Numb. 20. 8.) that it fhould afcend or king up,according to the word of the Lord.Thus 7hargum Ionatban explaineth it, Afccend 0 Well, afcendOWell, did they fang unto it, and it afcended. Or if they fang it after,it is a memori- all and celebration of Gods goodneffe and faith - falnes,as he had fpoken unto them: Afcend 0 Well, that is,come up into our heart or memory; anJwer (or fins) ye fit, that it may never be forgotten. And afeending or eomming up, is often ufed in this fenfe,as in Jer.3.16.neither/ball it afiend(or come up) on the heart, neither fball they reanember it : and in Jer. 51.5o. The Well , the Princes digged it] or, 0 Well , wbich.the Princes Jigged, which the Nobles of the people delved: where Jigged and delved are two words of the fame meaning, as in the Hebrew Capbar and Cando. The Princes and Nobles of If- rael digging this Well , and the memory thereof thus celebratedby the Cong of Ifrael,fetteth forth the glory of this gracious gift of God unto his people, and figured the labours and indnftry of the Governours of the Church, to bring forth the waters of the Spirit, by the preaching of the 1 Word, and opening of the Scriptures, a Chron. 17.7,8,9. Cbazkuni faith , this is that which in Numb. 33. 48. is called, the plaines of Moab. to Bamoth] by interpretation, High - places : that is called Beth Jefimoth (faith Chazkuni) in Num- bers 33. 49. Verfe 20. in the field] that it, in the rouötrey of Moab. This valley, as Chazllum faith, is calledin Numb.33.49 Abel Shittim in the plains ofMoab. the bead ofPifgab] by head, may be under- ftood the top of the mount Pifgah, or the beginning of the fame: the Greeke tranflateth it fen the top. Cbazkuoi expoundeth it thus, That Samah (or High place) which is in the fieldof Moab, it the bead of Pif ab (or of the Hill) that boketb toward Jelhi- mon, which is a greatwildernef. and ielooketh] that is the Hill Pifgab looketh; and fo the Greek verfion referreth it thereto. All thefe places are by the Chaldee paraphraft refer- red to the Well aforefaid, thus ; And from (the place) where it was given unto them , it defcended with them to the valleys, and from the valys it afcended with then: to the High places, and from the High places to the valle that is in the field f Moab, &c.
