lLootting unto jlcfu.s'. Book lV. 409 . a; he was lifted "P· How we ,are to nun:tg.e our Fairh~ ro draw down dt.c virtue of Chri!t'sdeath' into our fouls, I ha\'e difcovered before; and lee us now be tn the pra– dice of thofe rules; certainly there is a conveyance of an healing, ll:rengthning, quick– ning virrueHowin~ into t~te Soul in the. time of its viewing, eying, contemplating, re– tlec'ling upon Chn!l cruofied, Chnfl lifted up; and this comes from the fecretprefence of God, bleffing this our looking upcn Chnft. as the Ordinance by which he bath ap– pointed to make an effeCtual imprefiion upon the heart. It is not for us curioully to en– quire, how this fhould be: Principles (we fay) are nor to be proved; fave only God hath faid it, and experience bath found it out, that when Faith is occafioned tO act on any futable facred object, God by his Spirit doth not fail to anfwer; in fuch a rafe he fills the Soul with comfort, ble!l1ng, virtue; he returns upon the Soul (by, from, and tllrough the actings of I'aith) whatfoever by it is looked for . . Indeed none knoweth this, but he that feels it; and none feels this that knoweth how to exprefs it 1 as there is fomewhat in the fire (heat, warmth and light) which no Painter can exprefs; and as , there is fomewhat in the face (hMt, warmth and life) whichno Limner can fet forth; fo there is fomewhat flowingin to the foul, while it is aCting faith on the Death of Chrill:, which, for the rife, or way, or manner of its working, is beyond what tongue can fpeak, or pen can write, or pencil can delineate. Come then, if we would have grace, endure affiictions, die to fin, grow in our mortification: let m again and again return to our duty of looking unto Jefiu, or believing in Jefus, as he wasliftedup. And yet when all is done, let us not think that fin will die or ccafe in us altogether. for that is an higher perfection than th;s life will ~ear; only in the ufe of the means,' and through Gods ble!l1ng, we may expect thus far, that fin fl~al! not reign, it fhall not wear a Crown, it fltall not fit in the Throne, it fl1all hold no Parliaments, it fhall give no law> wi<hin us;- we n.all not ferve it, but we il•all die to tbe dominion of it, byvirtueof this Death of Jefus Chrifl. And tbis, He grant who died for us; Amen, Amen. Thus far we have loo~dan Je[iu as our Jefu'; in his fuffcrings and death. Our next work is to loolcon ?efu<carrying on the great work of our Salvation during the time of his Refurrection, and abdde upon earth, until his Afcenfion, or taking up t,o Heaven. LOOK-
