JLooltiug unto 'jjcfus. S g C T. V. Of the two N~tures wherein Chrijl fits at God's right hand. 3. ACcording to what Nature is Cbrin faid to lir at the right band of God? I an- • fwer ;_ a.ccordmg to both Nature.s; }ir!l he l1~s at G?d's right hand as God; !Jereby hts Dtvtmty was declared, and Ius Ktngdom IS fuch,. that Aone that is a pure Pfa'. IIO. r. ~r,earure can poilibly exec~te; The Lord fa•dto my Lord, faHh David, fit thou on my r.ght hand. The Lord fatd to my Lord J ('·) God fatd to Chnll: now Chrifl was no• Da'1Jid's Lord mee~ly as ma~, but as God. And, J.. He firs at God's right hand as man too; l1ereby hts Humamty was exalted, and a power is given to Chrifl as man, John f· >7· H e hath gi'1Jen him power to execute judgment, in a< n:11ch a; be is the Son of man. In the adminiftrarion of his Kirgdom the manhood of Chrift doth concur, as an In!lrument working with his Godh:ad. Hence this Seilion at Gods rightl1and is tr11ly and pro– perly annbuted to Chrdl, as ·l-<~'~f'""; and not only to the one Nature of Chri!l Hcb. 8. r. whether Divine or Humane. Or it is attributed to Chrifl as Mediator. in which re: fped he is called an high Prieft, We ha·ve fr.ch an high Priejl, n-bois flt on the right handof the Throne of the Majeftyin the hetwens.---And in which refpect he is called Ao!h f· 3 '· a Prince, Him hath God exalted with hu right hand, to be a Prince, and a Sa'1Jiour. Now Chriftisnota Prieft and aPrincemeerly according to one Nature, whether Divine or Humane. I deny not bur Chrill: had a narural Kingdom with his Father as God, be- . fore ,the foundation of the w9rld; bnr this Kingdom as God-man Chrift had nor be– fore his afcenfion into Heaven. So then Chrifl !irrerh at the right hand of God by a mediatory action, which he execureth according to both Natures, the Word working w;llat perraineth to the Word, and the lle!h what appcrtaineth to the lldh; Chri!l is Mediator as God and man, and glory bath re.dounded unto him as God and man and living in this glory he ruleth and governeth his Church as God and man , he afc'ended indeed into Heaven in his hnmaniry only, but he fitterh at rhe right hand of God as Mediator in refpect of both Natures. 1 he LmherAns attribute this Seilion at God's right hand only to the humane nature of Chri!l ; they fay thi• Seilion is nothing elfe but rll~ eievlting of his humane nature to the full and free ufe of feme of the divine propenies, as of omnipotency, omnifcience, omniprefence ; the ground of this error is, thiu t.hey fuppofe !!pon the union of the two Natures in Chri!l, a real communicati– on of the divii.e properties to follow; fo that the humane nature is made truly omnipo– tent, omnifciem, omniprefem, not by, any confufion of properties, nor yet by any bare cotpmuniou and concourfe of it to the fame effect, each Nature working that which belongrth to it with communion of the other, (for this we grant) but by a real do– nation, by which the divine properties fo become the properties of the lmmane nature, that the humane natw-e may work with them no lefs than the Divine nature it felf, for the perfecting r·f it felf. Againft this Opinion we hav_e thefe Reafon~; I. The ~nion cannot caufe the 'humane nature to partake more m the properues of the DIVIne, than it cauferh the Divine to partake in the properties of the humane. 2. If a true and real communication did follow of the Divine attributes, it mull needs be of all thr At– tributes, as of eternity, and infinitenefs, f~eing rhefe are the Divine dfence, which can no way bedivided. 3. Infinite perfedwns cannot perfect linue natures, no more than reafonable perfetlions can make perfect unreafonable creatures. .'!· To what ~nd lhould created gifts ferve, which Chritl hath received above meafure, 1! now more.no– f>le properties lhouldenter and be conferred o.n Jefus Chnfl? other Reafons are g•ven in, but I willingly decline all conrroverfial pomts.
