314 Book IV. Leoking unto j-efas. Chap.z.Sed.z thing_,whiles he was in his mothers womb; he that from all etern· ty began, he was then carrying on the great work of our falvation for us ; 0 confider this conception thus, tilt thou bring'H it neare and c!ofe to thy foul; till thou feclell· fome fwe_erneffe and power, coming and flowing from Jefus in the womb. 3. Confrderthe duplicity of natures in Jefus Chriil:: the Word wM madeflefh ; no fooner was ·he conceived, but he was Godman, man-God; he was perfe6t ly framed, and inil:antly united to the etern;!l Word : God fent hu Sonne, there's the nature divine; made ofa woman;there's the nature humane. Certainly greal;_is this myfiery, that the Word is made fleih; that the Son of God is made ofa woman; that a il:arre gives light to the Sun; t,hat a branch doth beare the Vine; that a creature. gives being to the Creatour; that t.he mother was' younger then what £he bare , and a great deale Ieifer then what £he conteined. Admire ' 0 my foul at this ! but withal confider, that all this was tor us, and our f.·dvation; he WJsman that he might dye for us, and he was God, that his deatb migbt be fufficient to [ave us; had he been man alone , not God, he might have fuffcred, but he c.ould Bever have fati!fied for fin, he conld not have been [efm a Saviour offouls; and had he been God alone, not man, he had not been ofkin to our nature offending, and fo he could not have fatisfied the juil:ice of God in the fame nature wherein it was offended; neither couki_he as God alone have dyed for fin; and the Decree was out, that our Redeemer mufl dye for fin, for without fo edding of blood there is no remiffion; and no !bedding of blood, no paliion could pofiibl y befall the Godhead of Jefus Chriil:. I !hall not difpute the power of God, wheth.er he was Jlble to lay down another kinde ofway ofmans redemption, then by the incarnation ofthe Son ofGod: without contraverile chis was the will ofGod, and he appointed no other way, becaufe he would not. 0 my foul confidr,.r o&:his in relation to thy felfe, he is God-man, that he migh$'uffer and fatistie for thy !ins; he ~God. man t ba t he might be able, and fit moll: fully toiinilh the work of thy falvarion; as God he is able, and a·s man he is f.it to difd1arge the office of a Media tour; as God he is able ro l;eare the puniihment of fin, and as rran he is fit to fuffer tor fin; Q the.wifdome ofGod in this very way? mans nature can fuffer death,
