Book IV. Looking urJto fef~~t, Chap. I .SeCt. 4 think it a very il:range defigne that the Sonne of God fhou!d be brought into a wi!dernefle to be fet on by all the devils in hell . but in thisalfo God had another remote end (i.) his own glory' and our good. r. His own glory appeared in this, had no~ Sathan tempted Chrift, how fhould Chrift have overcome Sathan? the firft Adam was tempted and vanquifbed, the fecond Adam ' to repay and repaire that foile, doth vanquiih in being tempt~d. now herein was the power of · hrift exceedmgly manifefted; th~ Devil having the chaine let loofe, he lets fly at Chrift with all his might; and Chrift, that without blowes could not have got a victory, by this furious atfault ofSat~an, he both overcomes him~ and triumphs over him. And herem were the graces ofChrift . exceedingly manifefted; how was the faith, patience, humility zeale and valour ofChrift fer forth, which they could not hav; been: if he had alwaies !yen quietly in garrifon, and never had corneinto the skirmiili? who could have felt the oderiferous fmells of thofe aromatical fpices, if they had not been punned and bruifed in this morrer oftemptation? it was by this meanes that the graces ofCbrift clearly fhined forth to his eternal praife. 2.. As it was for his glory, fo alfo for our good. Now we fee what manner of adverfary we have, how he fights, and how he is refilled, and how over come; now we fee the dearer we are to God; the more obnoxious we are to a trial of temptation; now we fee thatthe heft of Saints may be tempted or allured to the worft of evils . fince Chrift himfelfe is folicited to infidelity tovetoufneffe:and idolatry; now we fee that we have not a Savi: our and high Prieft, tbat canllot be toJtched with the feeling of our Heb. 4· 15>16 • infirmities, but fuch a one as w.u in all things tempted in iik.f fort, yet without jinne ; and therefore we may go boldly, to the thro11e of grace, that we may receive mere;, and finde graa of help in time of need. 4 · The time and occafion ofthe devils onfet, it was at the end offourt} dayrs/ aft, and when he Wtts an hungred~ Somefay ( asyoli h:t ve heard ) that all thofe fourty dayes, when Chrifr was in the wilderneffe, he was tempted only invifibly: for Sathan during· thattimc affumed not any vifibleor confpicuous fhape, which ac the end of the fuurty daies (fay they) be did: my meaning is not to contraverrthef~ points. Howfoever for his tempting, yet for his fafting fourtydayes, and fourty nights there is no contra- . verfie ;'
