Argu. Book IV. Le.oking utJto feftU, S ll CT. 5· Of the great c~ntraverjie, whether we are not juflified by the paffive rightcoufnef[~ of (hrift only, without any t·on(tderaticn had ro the righteoufneJfe of Chrifl either inherent in him, Qr performed by him. I~· Or my part I am for the negative, upon thefe well known grounds. 1 : 1. By what alone the law is not fully f:1tisfied, by that alone we are not juftified ; but by the pafiive obedience ofChrift alone, the la.w is not fullyfatisfied, therefore by his paffive obedience only we are not jufrified. Thus far I grant that the law is fully fatisfied by his paffive obedience in refpeel: of the penalty therein threatried, but not in refpea of the commandment fol' the obtaining of the hleifednefs therein promifed; and the righteoufnefs of Rom.1o. ~· the law is thus defcribed, that the man which doth thefe things fhalt live by them. Againfl this are diverfe exceptions of the adverfaries, As, I. That the law is ·fatisfied either by doing that which is commanded, or by fuffering the puniiliment which is threatned . .Anfw. It is true in refpeel: of the penall fratutes ofmen, but not in refped: of the commandments of God, in which there is not only a penalty threatned, but a bleJTedneJTe promifed: if man had continued in his integrity, the law might have beeQ fa.tisfied · by obedience only ; but being fa!! en into a frate ofdifobedience, two things are neceffarily required to the fulfilling of the law, ( i.) the bearing of the penalty, and the performing of the command; .the one to efcape hell, and the other to obtaine heaven. 2 . They except that whofoever are freed from hell, are alfo admitted to heaven. Anjw. The reafon thereof is becaufe Chnft who did beare the puniiliment to free us from hell, did alfo fulfill the commands to bring us to heaven ; but l:lowfoever thefe two benefits ofChrift do alwayes concurre in the party jufrified, as the caufes thereof concurred in Chrifr, who not only did both obey and fuffe r, but in obeying fuffered, and in fuffering obeyed; yet both the caufesbetween themfelves, and the effeCl:s between themfelves, are carefu lly to be diftinguiilied ; for as it is ?ne th!Og
