46p Book IV. Chap.4.Sett. 5 ~---~---~ 1tom.8. z. Job. I~. 1, death and damnation, to a ftate of life and falvation . but if juihfication be nothing elfe but bare rem ilion of fins,' then is there in it only a not imputing of finne, but no acceptation as righteous ; a freedome from hell, but no title to heaven. --- they fay indeed, that to whom finne is not imputed, ro them righteoufnetfe is imputed ; aBd we grant that thefe things do al wayes concmrc; but yet they are not to be confounded, for they dtffer in themfelves, and in tbeir caufes, and in their eff~cts I. In themCelves, for it is one thmg to be acquitted from the guilt offinne, and anotherthing to be made righteous, as we fee dayly in the pardon of malefactors. 2. In thetr caufes, for the remi.fiion oflinne is to be attributed to Chrifis fatisfactory futferings, and accepmioo as righteous unto life to Chrifis meritorious obedience. 3. In their effects, for by remiffion of finne we are freed from hell, and by imputation of Chrifis obedience we have right unto heaven. I will not deny but tha.t to Chrifis habitual and actual righteoufnetfe is fometimes attributed freedome from finne and hell as in Rom. 8. 2. the law ef the Spirit of life which is in Chrift {efus hath made me free from the law of jinne and death ; and on the contrary fide to Chrifis paffive obedience is fometimes attributed a right unto heaven as in Heb. 9 I 5 . that by mwm of his dMth,- they which llrc called might receive the promife of eternal inheritance; but [u,h places as thefe, are to be underfiood by a Symchdoche, which puts only one part ofChrifis obedience forthe whole obedience ofChrifi. But I mull recall my felfe, my defigne in this work was not for contraverfies; I leave that to others; See Downh11m, Jlurt,es, 'l'(ortm, &e, for my part I am fure 1 have before me a more edifying work, which is to take a view of this {efus, not only for intellection, but (or devotion, and for the Jlirring up of our affections. Thus far I have held forth Jefus in his life, ordureing the time of his minillry, till the laft Paffeover, , and now was it that {efus k..new his houre w.u come, and rhat he jhould depart out of this world NJJto the Father ; but of that t.rreafter ; our next bufinelfe is to direct you in the Art or Myficry, how we are to look. untQ {efm in refpect of his life.
