But Joh.14. 16, ~. As they waited for theSpirit,fo they were rightly difpofed to receive the Spiri-t , for they were 11/l with ont11ccord in one pl11a. Marke here the qualifications of thefe perfons ; the) were all with one accord, &c. To thofe that accord is the Spirit given; where is nothing but difcord, jars, divifions, fractions, there is no Spirit ofGod ; for the Spirit is the Author of concord, peace, unity, and amity; he is the very effential unity, love, and love-knot of the two perfons, the Father and the Son ~ even of God with God : and he was fent robe the union, love, and love-knot of the two natures united in Chrift, even of God with man ; and can we imagine that effential unity will enter but where there is unity? can the Spirit ofunicy come or remaine but where there is unity of fpirit? verily there is not, there cannot be a more pro~ per and peculiar, a.more true and certaine difpofition to make us ineete for the Spirit, than that quality in us that is likeft to his natureandeffence; and that is unity, love, concord : do we marveile that the Spirit doth fcarcely pant in us? alas we are not all ofone accord; the very firll: poynt ii wanting to make us me~te for the coming ofthe holy Ghoft upon us.
