Ofthe meafure of the ho/7 Ghofl now given-. 4· f' Or the meafure-, what or how much of the Spirit was now given? this quefiion isnece!fary, becaufe we bring in the Spirits miffiou afterChriftsafcenfion, as if the holy Gho!l: had not been given before this tirru:. That this was the time of thecoming ofth~ holy Ghoft,is _ve~y plaine, but that the holy Gho!l: was not gtven before .thts ttme,we cannot fay; certainly the Prophets fpake by him, and the Apofiles had him, not only 1..11 when they were fir a called, hut more fully when he bret~thed on , , .1o. u .. them, 11nd [aid unto them,. receive ;e the ho!J q~oft. So thatifye frudy the reconcili1tion of thefe things, I know not any way better than to put it on the meafure, or degrees of the Spirits miffion.-- I know fome go about to reconcile, it thus, that the holy Ghoft was given before fecretly with grace, but now he was given in a vifible lbape with power. Others thus; that the holy Ghofi was before given in refped: .of gra<;e and minifieria.J gifts, but now he was given in refpect ofvertue, or ghofily ability to work wonders, and to fpeak with diverfe language!t. But we finde that the Propl:lets and Apoftles before this had not only grace~ and minificria·lgifts, but a miraculous vertue, even the ·Spirit ofpowerful and extraordinary operation: only here was the differe'nce, that before this, the Spirit was but .fprinkled (~s it were) upon them, but now it was poured·upon them ; befor~ dlis they were gently breathed on, and refref.hed with·a fmall gale, but now they were all blown upon with a mighty winde; without contraverfie a difference there is in the Spirits miffion. And that fome lay down c.hiefely in tbefe three things.-----.!' ~ As.-- :t. In the manner of the Spirits miffion.: tMhe old Church the Spirit came ufually in dreames, or vifions. or in a low. ft~U voyce, or in fome latent wayes; but now he came in power, in. ~vidence, and demonfiration; and therefore it is called t.he Spirit;; lf!pl!.t . 17· , of rtvelation and k:'o111/edge/; At the apparition ofGod to Elijah , I!
