I 0 vcr .tl• and weighty fententious fpeeches; now fuc.b as thefe the Spirit ~ave them to utter ; magnalia Dei (as in the eleventh.verfc) the wonderful work./ of g~d; they fpake of thofe fingular benefits Ood offered to the world by the death of his Son; they fpake of t!:e wor.kofour redemption, of the merits ofChrift, ohhe glory and riches ofhis grace, of the praifcs due to his Name for aH his mercies . othcrsadde that they fpake ofthofe admirabie works of the T~inity ,as of our creation, redemption, and fant'tification • and ofwhat(oever generally concerned the falvation ofmankind; their fpeeches were not cruditie~ of their own braine, trivial bafe or vulgar ftutfe ; but. magnaiiA , great and high pdynts: Apothegmes or Oracles, .u the Spirit gt~ve them utter~nce. But thefe reafons are remote as to us. 3. That be might fill the hearts of all the Saints, and make them Temples and receptacles for the holy Ghoft. Know JC not that yoHr body it the Temple of the holy Ghoft , which is in yuu~ 1 Cor.6.t 9· which ye h11ve of Cjod, andye are not your own? It is fctid here, that after the mighty rufhing winde, and.cloven fiery tongues, theJ were 111/ filled with the hoi] Ghoft: and began to [peak. with other. tongun. Firft, they were filled with the holy <bhoft, and then they fpake with other tongues; the holy Ghoft begins inward, and works outward; it firft alters the minde, before it change the fpeech; it firft works on the Spirit before on the phraze or J·utterance; this was the firft work of the Spirit, it filled them. And thus for the dayly miniftrations, fuch muft be appoynted as were full of the hoi] qhoff; and Stephen is faid to be fult of the holy Ghoft : and Barnabat is,callcd a goodman, and fu/i ofthe hoi] Ghoft. The holy Ghofi is ufually faid to fill the Saints, only whether it be the perfon of the ·holy Ghofi, or the impreffions or tht holy Ghoft,is a very great quefiio1-1; for my part 1 am apt to incline to their minde who fay not only the impreffions ofthe Spirit, the qualities of holiods, the gifts and graces of the holy Ghoft , or as fome think habitual grace in a fpecial manner; but that_theholy Ghoft himfelfdoth fill, and dwell, and reign in the heartsofall regenerate men . And this feems cleare to me. 1 .By .Scriptures. 2. By arguments. Joh 7·3 8 >39· I.
