86o Book.IV. Part.. V. Looking unto JeftM. Chap. r.Sech t to conceive. Certainly it dwells not in us as in Chrifr, vi>:.. bodil], Co/.2.9 . unmrajt~ rably, Job. 3·34· .origintdly, 2 Cor. 3. I 7· the Spirit is _in Chrill, as light in the fun, but the Spirit is in us 'ln c brifto ut as light in the ~yre : nei~her dare I affirrne, . that the Spirit is in lux in-fi,le, in us more eifenttally than tn any other men or creatures, for the ' 110bio ut lttmcn, effence thereof is inqivifible and omniprefent: But this I fay, in air c. that the Spirit is in the faithful above all others, 1. In refpect <;Jfcovenant, the Saints have the Spirit by Gods free grace and Ezelc.3~. t7. covenant; I will put mJ Spirit within you, faith God in the ·::·3 7 · 14 • covenant, whichisnotonly to be - underftood of the giftsand graces ofhis Spirit, but alfo of the Spirit it felfe. 2. In refpect ofintimate faiBiliarity, and ncare acquaintance, the Spirit is in the faithful like an inmate or coinhabitant, comforting, direct. ing, ruling, ftrengthning, and cheriihing them; in which refpect . they are faid to be his houfes, and Temples, in which he dwelleth; whereas contrariwife worldlings and infidels to all thefe purpofes }oh~ 14 · 17, are meere ftrangers unto him, the world cannot receive him (faith , Chrift) becaufe it Jeeth him not, neither k._nowethbim, b~tt ye k,z1ow . him ,for he dwelleth.withyou, 11nd jh111l be in you. 3. In refpect of vertue and efficacy ; the Spirit works efficacioufly in his Saints; he c;hoofeth them for !tis own people, he poffefleth them as of his own right, he rules in their hearts as in the chiefe feateefhis Kingdome, he purgeth, and purifieth them from their finnes, he repleniiheth and filleth them \Yith his Iaving graces, he guides and directs them in the: way, ofholineffe, and never leaves them till he brings them to his Kingdom e. 4· In refpect ofunion ; it was an old errour of the heathens that the foul remaineth in the body after death, which opinion of theirs, though falfe, be. caufe it contradicts the Word, yet the thing it felf is poffible; and doth not contradict reafon, for the foul may have its local being in the body, and yet not give life to the body ; for it is not the fouls being . in the body, but its being united to the· body which makes the body live; fo it is not the Spirits being locally with the foul, but being rnyfrically united to the foul that gives it fpirituai life. Now in all thefe refpeCI:s the Spirit is in the faith• ful above all others. . I know the objections, As r.. If the Spirit be united to a belecvers foul, and fo made one with him, \ then may a ~eleever fay 1 Am the Spirit ; or. l .n.m tqtutl 'l'l'ith God in rt.fPe£1 . if
