---·---·--· "~·----,.-- Ch'ap. 1 .Sect II. Looking unto 1e[UJ. Uook.lV. Part.V. · 8E9 night of temptation, and pray fiill for day, God will appeare, and all {hall cleare up; we iball at !aft fee light widlOut, and fee light within; furely the day-fiarre will arrfe ir.J our hearts. · 5. There is a work of joy and comfort ; and this is a fuperadded feale of the Spirit ; the works of the Spirit you may fee are of a double kinde; either in us by imprinting fanCI:ifying grace, or upon us by fhining on our fouls, and by1fweet feelings of joy; habitual grace,or fanCI:ifying grace is more conftant, and alwayes like it felfe ; but this work ofcomfort and joy is of the nature of fuch priviledges as <bod vouchfafeth at one time and not at ano · ther; and hence it i> that a Chrifiian may have grace, aqci a Chriftian may know himfelfe to be in the fiate ofgrace, and yet in regard of comfort God may be gone. Thus it was with Job, he knew his Redeemer lived, and he refolved to truft in him ----- though he killed him ; he knew he was no hypocrite, he knew his graces were true; notwithftanding all the objections and imputations of his friends, they could not difpute him out of his fincerit,y, mJ righteoufnef{e I hold jaff, and will notlet it go. yet fob 17,6, for .the prefent he faw no light from heaven, but he wa5 In'~ fore and afflicted condition, till it pleafed the Lord to rev, eale himfelf in fpecial favour unto him. Now this work of joy ufually comes ndt till after faith; and many experiences ofGods Jove, and much waiting upon God. Thefeare rhe feveral works of the Spirits fealing. But why is it that we can · neither ad:ually beleeve, nor can know that we bdeeve, nor can enjoy peace and joy in belceving; without a frdh and new ad: of the Spirit? ' I anfwer, becaufe the whole carriage of a foul to heaven is above nature; where . the Spirit makes a !land, we ftand, and can go no farther; without the help of the Spirit we can neither make prem lfes, nor conclude for our fclves; it is the Spirit that fanctifies; and witnc£fes, and fealn our fou!1 unto the day of redemption. Many other reaforu may be rendred, but I fua11 fpeak of i:hem in the end of the Spirits miffion. · Thus far we have propounded the objed: , 'Vi-e. the afcenlion of Chrift, the feffion ofChriR at Gods right hand, and Chrifti miffion of the holy Ghoft; our next work is to dired: you how to look unto J efus ,in thefe refpeds. . ~ffff ~ CHAP•.
