In it are two things, a. A Prohibition. a. ACommination ofPunilhment. In the Prohibition are two things likewifeconfiderable. 1. The objett, God in general, and his Name in particular. 2. The Aft of which this Commandment fpeaks, and that either, z. Negatively and exprefly, not to take that Name in vain. 2. Pofitively and implied,toufe the Name of God reverently,fobcrly,confiderate- ly, and upon good caufe, thePop of this God is the immediateobjeft, and his glory or honour the immediate end of all the Commandment. duties commanded in the firlt table. Thishonour as was (hewed, is either inward, in'the worlhip of the heart, required in the firit commandment ; or outward, and that either infgue, by the outward geftureand adoration of the body, or in verbo, in our words or fpeeches of him,that is required in the fecond, this in the third Com- mandment, that conlìíts chiefly in adoration, this in praife. They differ in Chic, that the honour of outward adoration, is always given to one that's prefent, and to the partyhimfelf immediately ; this of the tongue bypraife goes beyond it, in that it may be given to one that is abfent, for we may praife one that's abfent and though God be always prefenr, yet when we fpeak of him to others, we (peak not to him . then as prefent : and betides, praife maybe given not only to his perfon, but ro his Pfal. ag. o.
