Serra. i 3. in Natural and Spiritual Perfanf I11.They dicier in the fubje& of the confliEt.In natural men the fight is in feveral faculties, reafon fighting again{+ fenfe and paílion, or cne dire of confcience againil the corrupt inclination of the will ;whence the fight is more at a ditlance by miflile Arms and v,:lication. But in the regenerate man the fight is more clofe in the fame faculty, the wif- dom of fleíh and fpirit counterahing in the fame underftanding, the luílings of the fle{h and fpirit in the fame will : whence the fight is as it were inter 7riarios Grace and Corruption immediatly ; which at firí+ haply was managed by the Haftati and Scrtati, Reafon and Intefeí +. The former is like the fight of the Souldiers of Fortune, more lazy and by way of Siege ; the latter more keen and vigorous by way of Affault an Onflait ; like that of Scanderbeg,4aho fought with his Enemies bread to breaíl in a Box or Grate. IV.They differ in the Inílruments or weapons wherewith they corn- bate. The natural mans weapons arc ( like himfelf) carnal ; to wir, natural or moral reafon, worldly fears or hopes, and fomerimes fpiri- tuaI fears or hopes but carnalized, namely flavifh fear and mercenary hopes. But the Regenerate mans weapons are Spiritual, 2 Cant 0.4. to wir, gracious Intereí+, and all the Spiritual Armour, Ephef. 6.verf. a 1. 18. efpecially the Shield of Faith, and the Sword of the Spirit. V. They differ in the manner of the fight. The natural mans com- bate is more mercenary ; admits of more Parleys,ceßations,correCpon- dencies, as t Sam. 15.9. Sauls fight with Amaleck But the Spiritual man (as fuch) fights it out to the Taft, and will give no Quarter. The for- mer is like the firife between Wind and Tide, which often come about and are both of one fide; the latter is like the Dam and the Tide, that ftrive till one he born down : or like Stream and Tide meeting and con- ±lid -ting till one hath overbbrn the other. V LThey differ in the extent- of the conflia,in relation to its fubje&: and duration. The extent of the SubjeEt is double. r. As to the facul- _ties. 2. As to the Adls. As to t he faculties ; The feat of War in the Regenerate is every faculty, fiefh and fpirit being ever mixed (as light and darknefs in every point of Ayr in the twilight) 3 Thef.5.2 3.Grace and Corruption Leaven the whole man So that in the Regenerate there is at the fame time both a Civil and a Forreign War, that in the fame faculty, this in one faculty againf+ another. Contrariwife, in the Unregenerate there is ulually nothing but a forreign War between feveral faculties, there being nothing of fpiritual good in their wills and affenions, to fet the fame faculty againfi it Pelf, 321
