Serm.i4 Now mxfi we Pray in Faith ? 327 thot up to Heaven upon your oven head to your wounding.Ot this uf- ( }ion I Ihall fpcak very plainly, as the Lord (hall enable me in the ev - dence and demonflration of the Spirir, Comparing Spiritual things wich Spiritual things. Some may make it to imply more to ask in Faich thin to ask with Faith, or that it is more to be in Faith, than for Faith to be in Arr. To be im Love is more than to love, and when it is Paid, Re`v.a.ao. that the Apoflle was in the Spirit, it thews that not only hehad the Spirit, and was filled with it, but there were great overflowing, and a fuper-abun- dance of the Spirit. This the Apoflle feems to call, 3amec 5. a 5. the Prayer of Faith,as if their Faith rather prayed than they,as Paul fpeaks; It net 1, but the Grace of God in me, when Faith rather may be faid to as au than we to adl Faith. But I fuppofe thofe high degrees of Faith cannot be meant here; becaufe it is faid, that they who have not this Faith, mull not think zo receive any thing, not the lea(I ; if fo then the highe(I degrees of Faith should be required for the obtaining the lower degrees of Mercy ; but Scripture promifes are made to the TrHch, and not to the degrees of Grace. To Faith that is but as a graine of Muflard-feed to remove Mountains, and to Love that is but a fpark to be viaorious, Mat.' 2. 20. but I (hall rather endeavour to (hew you how Faith is taken here, than how it is taken in other places ;. therefore,To'akin Faith, may be here fpoken in reference to the Perlon that prayes, viz. he that prayes milli be in the Faith a faithful or Righteous Perlon. The Scripture is full to this purpofe, as Pfalm 66.18. If I regard iniquity in mine heart, though my tongue do not plead for it, nay, though it fpeaks againfl it, thòugh I refrain from it in my Life ; for one may love the fin we com- mit not, and if I do fo regard it in mine heart God will not hear my Prayers : if I give it fo much as a good look,, for fo the Hebrew, if I fee Iniquity in my heart, if I take pleafure in fin, for David calls it painful tuiquity, for fo in.the Hebrew, No Saint can live without com- mitting fin, but all Saints live without regarding it in their hearts. So alto James 5.1 5. The -Prayer of a righteo,ee man availet h much, how much is not let down, becaufe it cannot be fet down how much it availes, as much as they pleafe, they may have what they will; but for a wicked man though his Prayers were efie tual they avail not much, fnce their delires are for tennporals. The other places are full to this point, viz. that the Prayers of none but Righteous perfons are accepted with God, as yohn9.31. Chap.a.15._ Fr61,v.28.9. E 7ohm 33 5. I.°o .,
