41-0 Han may Ive have f uta1le Conceptions Sera. Y7, vidence ; God cloth great things pail' finding out, and wonders without number; Yet lo,hegoeth by us and we fee him not, he paffeth en a1fo, but we perceive him not, Job 9. r o, c I. God is Invifible rn himfelf and In comprehenfible in his works; yob made it his work to trace God in his works, lob 23.8, 9. Sometimes God was working forward or before him, fometimes backward or behind him ; Sometimes on his right - hand, fometimes at his left hand ; lob follows him up and down if he might apprehend him, and the reafon and deign of God in all his works, but he could not perceive him, God hid himfelf from him. Much more of the Eternal Godhead w .s mañifefied in his moil righteous and holy Law ; But the manifeflations of God here af- frighted them that law it ; the People cry our, Let not the Lord fpeak, any more to us left we die; and Moles him felf laid, I exceedingly fear, fo terrible was the fight of God:there, Heb. z a. 2 r. Hence it will follow, that the clearell , fweetefl, moil comfortable manifef?ations of God to us , and fuch as can beget in us right appre- henfions and conceptions of God , are made out to us only in Jefus Chriff, who is the Image o the In ifibleGod, Go/off. i, r5. In whom God hath made fuch difcoveries of himfelf as can no where be feen but in Chrifl ; He is the exprefs Image or Charac`lcr of his Fathers Per - fon, Heb.i.3. The exac`l refemblance of all his Fathers excellencies in their utmofl perfec`Iions; therefore when Philip defìred him to (hew them of the Father, to give them a fight to fatisfa&ion, ?oh. 14. g, t o, He that hash feen me (faith Chrif[ to him) bath feen the Father ; Be. lieve it Philip, I am in the Father and the Father is in me. In the works of Creation God is a God above us, In his works of Providence a God without us, In the Law a God againil us, In him felf a God Invifible to us ; Only in Chrill he is Emmanuel , God mani. felled in our Flefh, God in us, God with us, God for us. Hence follows the Fourth Propofition ; That the mani fellations of God to us in Chrifi, are thofe which alone can beget thofe due apprc- henfions and right Conceptions of God, with which w: muff draw near to him, and perform all our worfhip to him. As Abraham is held forth to us a Pattern of Faith, fo he maybe to us a Pattern of wor(hip,in as much as all true worfhip to God is per. formed by Faith , by Faith in Chrifl ; Such apprehcrifions therefore Abraham had of God in his worfhip, fuch apprehenfions of God we are to have in our worfhip ; and as Abraham had thofe conceptions of God by Faith in Chrifl fo can we have the like conceptions of God by Faith in Chrifl only. z, `Thole
