Serm. 17. of God in Duty ? 417 The Humanity of Chrift was to the Godhead as a back of metal to a Chriflal Glafs; Look on fuch a glafs in its pure fubflance and it is tranfparent, put a back of metal to it and it gives a beautiful reflex: So if we take up Conceptions of the Godhead in its pure Effence, it is tranfparent; If we confider God Infinite, Almighty, Immenfe, Eter- nal, what is this to the Creature,or our comfort ? If the confider him in his Power, Juf}ice, Wifdom Holinefs, Goodnefs, Truch,what is this to us : Yea, all thefe are agai nil us as we are finner ;But if we take up Conceptions of God in all thefe Attributes as they appear to us in ChriE, as they are backt with the Humanity of Chrifl, fo they make a moll comfortable reflex upon us; In this glafs we behold the glory of the Lord,and are changedinto the fame fimilitude from glory to glory by the Spirit of the Lord, 2 Car.3 .18. In this Glafs we behold that Wifdom by which we are inflrut`ded, that righteoufnefs by which we are j'aflified, that power by which we are preferved, that grace by which we are chofen and called,that goodnefs by which we are reliev- ed and fupplied, that holinefs by which we are transformed, that glo- ry to which we (hall be conformed.
