Pfxi.B g,r o. not onely purch.afed falvation for them, but them for it; not onely the poffibility of Heaven, but a reali propriety in it : and certainly propriety is abfolutely neceffary unto the ref efhment of every comfort : Wbar are all the treafures of either or both the //folic, to him who onely hears of them ? but meer ftories. What all the glo- ry of Heaven to him who is thruft from the enjoyment of them ? but meer torments. There mutt he a propriety in all fpirituall bleffings before they can be refrfhing : and this alone from Chrift. I give unto them eternal( life, and they 'ball never perij . And what is cleerly afferted in thefe Scriptures, is ftrongly intimated in thofe emblems by which Chrill is defcribed. What the root is to the Tree, the Vine to the branches, the head to the body, all this is Chrift to believers, viz. not only a treafury of all good, but a fountain continually fireaming down all kind of fpiri :wall bleffings into their fouls : and though faith be both the eye that difcerns, and the hand that receives all from Chrifts fullnefs, yet 'cis he that by his Spirit works this grace in us. Faith is our ad, but it is his gift;'sis we that beleeve, but 'cis Chrift en- ables us to beleeve : fo that both in put-chafing and applying fa lvation Chrif is (í1l. 3. What advantage is it to beleevers to have their All in Chrift ? z. Becaufe our falvation could have been in no hand fo fafefo fuse as in the hand of Chri(t : had it been in our hand by any inhæ- rent, righteoufnefs, our fad exprience we have had of our own un- faithfu,lndfs, in finning away that happinefs wherein we were crea- ted, may caufe us for ever to be jealous of our [elves ; but to have it in the hand of him who is mighty ro fave even to the utmoft, who is fo faithful! that in all our di{lreffes he is touched with our infirmi- ties ; we cannot be fo fenfible of our own miferies, but Chrifi is mush snore: and hence it is that as we have no other Saviour betides him, fo is it impoßble we íhould have any like unto him. 2. Becaufe our falvation could have been in no way fo comfor- table becaufe as God hath the glory of every attribute, fo have Chriflians the comfort of every attribute in this tray of faivation; for as God hath the glory of his Juftice from them (in their Head and furety) to whom in ,this way he chews mercy; mercy and truth are met together, righteonfnefs and peace have killed each other.
