Of Elet1ion. CHAP. Ill. God if the God of all Gtace, with a difcriinination to [VS, J not to otherr; ejpeciaUy fuch others as have an imperfeel Temporary wor~ wrought in them; or he i-s the God ofaft Grace only to his EleU, wh!Jm he effe. fJuaUy calls and invincibly foves; not to otherr, whom he leaves to faU away. I pE T E R V. I o. --hatb called [ VS]-- I Undertook for every wo.rd that it lhould coiJiri!mtt to our Subject, either fome addition unto the llluilration of tht grace of God, the God of aU grace; or the collfirmatJOn of our Faith m God·s carr;·i11g VS through TrmptatiotJs unto glory, or unro both. [VS] here may feemto ferve to no further ufe, than to denote thofe to whom he wrote to be the perfons whom God had called, C!'ic. and as lightly to be pafi over, But l hope to make it appear, rhat it hath befides this a further eminent and mofi emphatical importance; as if he had faid, God hath been to [V S] a God ol grace in our Calling, and in preierving [VS,] but fo he is tltlt [to 0· thtrs J whom yet he calls, but leaves to fall away; and this will bring fonh a new and great point for; he exaltation of Free-grace towards us. This Intention of Difcrimination in this Expreilion [VS,] not [Others,] by the Apofile, will appear, '· By the reality of the things here fpoken by Peter. 2. By the import of the Phrafe [VS]. l· From the Occafwn whereupon ·'f'tttr uttered this Coofolation to the Church of God. I, This Difcr:minating intent will appear from the Rtalitj of the things · fpokert here by Petrr in the Subilanrials of them, according as they have been already opened, when put together. For, r. That God doth, out of fpecial Grace, call [VS] as a God of graGe to [VS,] this in Scripture language elfewhere imports, that there are others whom he calls not out of grace, but from fame other Principle in himfelf; Thus cxpreOy Rom. 8. 28. The calltdaccordlt!!, to his pttrpoft; which in 2 Tim.t.g. is tun her <>plained robe, as in the Text, ACalti11g accordi11g to his cw11pu~poje andgrace, and the other part of the difiintl:ion is added, 110t accordJNg to works. Thefe both are in thofe Scriptures intended for apparent Notes of di· !lintl:ion of a Coil ing of [VS] out of Grace as the caufe, ,from calling of O– thers from out of his Providence; and which is carried on occording unro works. Thefe note a,difference in the Tenure of Callings; the Original Tenure Wf!ich rhev hold of, ours holds i" cdpite,in Free-hold of Grace; but others have theirs in Copy-hold ol· Works, and but 'Dum bene (egt{ftri1Jt, If thou dofl we!!, thou lh* be accepted. So that [VS] here ti;e Subjotl:s of the God of grace cal– ling them, doth in that rdped fecretly imply and connotate with it, and a Not Others, who yet have a fort of Calling. H h 2 ~.
