Chrifl by Ca!Jing us, fecures us in fafe Cuftody, and by a flrong Guard: From the time ofaManr Ca!Jing Chrifl beginr a£1uaUy to intercede for him, and then tak(r him into ·his Prtlyerr, as well as into his Caret. I PET. V. 10. Who bath CAL LE D VS BT JESVS CH R IS T. I Shall mention fuch Interefts only as are proper to Chrifi, from that lhare and influence which he hath in his actual Calling and Converting us, fuch (I fay) as are proper to him therein, And from thence I ll1all (as from the tormer) infer how greatly he is en~aged to continue his efficacious influ– ence toJlrmgthen, flabltfh, and pre(erve us. In General, it is one great difference of the firfi and fecond Adam, that though God would have ufed Adam, if he had ftood, to have conveyed Holi– nefs, or that Image of God by Generation to us, which himfelfhad by Cre– ation; he who was but a meer Creature (and conftituted the Head of all the refi of his kind )could have done that, by the Law of the lirll Creation: But fiill, if Adam had flood and thus had begotten Chil~ren , never fo many, in the Image,of God yet he lhould not have conveyed a Confirmation of them in that Ellate, not'a perpetuity or. an everlafting certainty of their not falling. That affirmation, by whom ever 1t IS alferted, IS wahout warrant : For fuch a perpetual eftablilhment is of Grace only, and above the Law of Creanon. Thofe fo born in him lhould frill have been left to the mutabthty of tbm own wills for the con;inuance in that Holinefs conveyed : But Jcfus Chrill, the fecond Adam , ferves not only to beget us in his own Image, then when fin– n.ers, which is done.by Calling of us; b~t asinvincibly to preferve, and con· 11n~1c, a~d uphold 11 in us, even to bnng forth dtmmefl, or but Jmoakwg wetk unk;ndled, tmto viefory.
