Defires proceed from Love, and 'tis exprefs'd in the fore- cited place, thy Servants who defire to fear thy Name. The fear of the Lord is their Treafure, not their Torment, for their fear to Offend him, is from their pure Love to Pleafe him. Indeed fervile Fear, that is meerly from the confederation of his Anger and Power, is cbnfftent with the Love of Sin, and inconfìfent with the Love of God : 'tis a judicial and violent impreflion on Confcience, that Carnal Men would fain deface, that they might freely enjoy their defir'd Objeas, and 'tis. by Fits, for God fometimes thunders in the Confcience as well as in the Air, But filial Fear is the Habitual Conftitution of a Saint, he is voluntary and a&ive to pre- ferve it in continual Fxercife. 3. The Fear of God, and Hope, are joyn'd in Scripture, and in the Hearts of Believers. The Lord delights in thofe that fear him, and hope in his mercy. Fear and Hope contemper each other : Fear with- out Hope is flavifh, and Hope without Fear is fecure. As the growth of things in Nature, Flowers and Fruits, is from the heat of the Days, and the cold moi- fture of the Nights, fo growth in Grace is, by the warm encouragements of Hope, and
