Spiritual Per fêcion. z. 'Tis true, if a Law be abfolutely impoffible it cancels it Pelf For there can be no authority in 'a fuperiour to command , nor obligation on a SubjeEt to obey, in a matter that is not capable of his choice. Abfolute impofibility quenches defire, and caufes defpair ; and that enervates the ftrength of the Soul, and cuts the finews of Induftry. Now we cannot fuppofe that God , whole Wifdom, Reaitúde and Goodnefs, are effential and unchangable, fhould com- mand reafonable Creatures any thingut- terly impof ible for then the caufe of their Sin and Mifery would not rife from themfelves , but they would be fatally loft and undone for ever. 2. The Command fignifies not a re- femblance of equality, for in that fenfe there is none holy as the Lord, but of analogy and conformity to his holy Na- ture, of which intelleaual Creatures are capable. 3. In the prefent Rate our Conformi- ty is not entire, our Graces are not pure, our Vertues not refin'd without allay But this is from our culpable impotence. And it cannot be imagined, that God Mould reverf this Law , and diffolve the obligation of it , becaufe we have contraaed a finful difability to perform.. it Betides, God is pleafed to offer di- 4 ine. 343
