Of Redemption. 69 ..o viâion of others, filch as are the common members of the vifible Church (at leaft) : As the Spirit is lent to convince the worldofSin, andRighteoufnefs, and Judgment. 4. And it is not to be grantedyou without proof, that by the World is meant all Reprobates asfilch: For Judas is before diftinguifhed from the World (as one given to Chrift) whenyet he was aReprobate : But either it may be the worldof prefent Unbelievers, whomChrift prayeth for elk-where, though not there : Or the Worldoffinal profeffed In- fidels and Enemiesof theChurch, as diftinâ from both Elect and Re- probate in theChurch. And feveral exprefftons of ChrifFs before of the Worlds hatingand perfecuting his Apoftles, feem not applicable to everyHypocrite, who prophefieth and cafteth out Devils in his Name, and perhaps fuffereth for his Truth, and excellently defendeth it, and bathfome love toBelievers. The fifth Crimination. C. " They make Chrifi to meritonly Pardonand salvation to Believers, " but not to have purchafed Faith it felf forany man. And by that way, " no one that he diedfor would befaved; For Faith is the neceffary Gift of God : And ifChrifl purchafednot that, allthe roil would bein vain. B. r. Let us not here confound theControverfiede nomine & de re: That ChrisTI diedtopurchafe the All of Faithfor us, is no Scripture-phrafe, fo far as I know. If therefore it be only thephrafe which they refufe, youmay well bear with them. Butas to the matter, they do not deny anyof thefe things, s. That Chrift is the Authorand Perfefter of our Faith, as Faith fignifieth the Chriftian Religion, or the Obje is and Doctrine of Faith. 2. That our own actual and habitual Faith is the Gift of God ; (Though the controverfiesabout the manner of giving it areto be afterward decided ). 3. That all that Chrift giveth, his Sacrifice procured ; and therefore it procured Faith. All this is commonly granted by molt School-men, Papifts, Lutherans, and moderate Armi- niane. But, 2. It mutt be confidered that Chrift did not die topurchafe Faith as immediately, and on the fame account, as to fatisfie for Sin, and purchafe us impunity or Redemption. The proper direct reafon of his Sufferings, was to demonftrate the Juftice of God againft Sin, infteadof mans ownfuffering for it ; and thereby to procure Pardon. We may well conceive Chrift promifing to the Father as it were, [ will fuller for Sinners, that they may not fufter! ] But youwill hardly defcribehis Undertaking thus, [I milldie, if thouwilt givemenFaith,] or [ iwill givethee fo much of my Blood for fo much Faith.] But be- caufe he knew that without Grace noman would believe and accept his Gift , therefore he whole Sufferings were primarily fatisfa/lion for sin, were fecondarily meritoriousof the means to bringmen to the intended end; that is, of the Word andSpirit, by which Chrift caufethSinners tobelieve : fo that Faith is a fruit of the Death of Chrift in a remoter fecondary fenfe. And in all this Name me any Chriftian Churches that are difagreed. C. "Tobring it onlyto a mansfreewill whetherhe willbelieve or not, is " not to give him Faith ; and to purchafe no more isnot to purchafe it. B. Do
