Chriff and holinefs be the mediumunicum to thatend and felicity, which he thinketh or believeth predominantly to be the only felicity ; yet as he hath force doubtingof it, fo he mayhave forcedelire ofa fenfible inferior felicity, though not predominant ; and thefe may alfomake him the more uncertainly to choofe themeans to the former. 3. And ifa mansunderftanding were fully fatisfied, that the only true felicityis in God and Heaven, yet he cannot but both feel ( fenfibly) and know (intellectually ) that there is alfo a prefent fenjible good : And therefore he muff complacencially will it : Andhis perception and will maygrow inordinate, and be en- tangledbyit, by undue adhefion anddelight : And fo he may bediver- ted from things fpiritual 5 yea and oppofe themeans of his true felicity, as oppofiteto his lower beloved good. A. " By this, you fuppofe that the fame man may have two ultimate " ends. B.I. If by an Vltimate endyoumean that only whicha man habitu- ally efleemeth, loveth andfeekgth aboveall refolvedly as his felicity, fono man hath but one. 2. But if youmean that which is his Ultimate end, eitherin a lower fenfe, or as to a particularad, I doubt not but he may have two: That is, he may fometimes by intellectual doubting waver towardsone fide to day, and towards another to morrow, though not equally; And he may alto have an inordinate complacency in things fenfible, and fo ufe means to pleafe his fettle, while he knoweth that other things are better. 3. And the School-menoft fay, thatbonum fenfibile or the pleating of fenfe, is oft madeto be finis in this fenfe, in that it is notmedium, nor referred to any thing elfe : As a holy perlon when he finneth by fenfuality, doth not love and ufe that Meat, and Drink, and Eafe, and Honour, and Lull, only as a medium to God and Glory. But it is not finis, fay they, properly, fo as that other things are referred to it. Butthe truth is thateven holy perlons, may choofe and ufe finful means for their flefhly pleafnreasan inordinateend ; and Meat, Drink,&c. are fuch means: And fo their Pleafure is properly an Ultimateend ; Butnot the predominant chief end, and fo not to be de- nominated finishominis, quoad vitae Curfum, but onlyas to his odd inor- dinate ad : And fo Paul faith, It is not I, but indwelling fin. So that we may fay that medium unicum ad unicam fielicitatem nel bonumamatum, ubi elfomnimoda ratio boni, 6. nihil repugnar, is tie' ceffarily willed ; (For this is no Election :) But otherwife not. j weft. 5. ButI altoafk you, Whether you think not that fomehabits (toevil at leali, ifnot togood) are fothong and like to nature, as that thewill till it be changed by anexterior power, is always, or almofc always determined according to them.
