B. Here are several things which mutt be diftinnly spoken to, I. Of Infants. II. Of the ftateof theHeathen World. III. Of the neceffity of finning. W. Of the neceffity of punishment for fin. Of these in order. r. For the cafe of Infants, there are three queftions tobe handled, I. Whether theyhave Original Sin? 2. Whether theyare worthy of punifhment for it ? 3. Whether theyarepunched for it, and howmany, and how? 1. For the firft, I have proved in a peculiarDifputation, that Infants. have Original Sin, that is, moral Pravity in difpoftion, withtheir par- ticipation in the guilt of Adam'sfin, asbeing feminally and virtually in him. And I find you not yet denying it. 2. For the fecond, no Chriftian doubteth, I think, but that all fin deferveth punifhment; But the defertof Anual Sinand of Original Sin areas different as thenatureofthe fin. Habitual orDifpofitive Pravity is a Difpofitive preparation or worthiness of punishment : And anual Sin, is an anual preparation for it, but all deferve it; that is, are Sub- jens morally fit for it, to demonftrate holy Justice. 3. For the third, Scripture and experience put it paft controverse,' that Infantsfufer: For, s. They aredeprived oftheSpirit of Holinefs, as quickly appeareth by their early pranice. Which privation is the greatest punifhment here. 2. They are hereupon left to the power of their own Corruption ; which defertion is a grievous punifhment. 3. They havepain and forrow. 4. And they die. And if they have all this fuffering here, it is unlikely that they are whollyfree hereafter, ifnot pardoned : Becaufe, s. Theyhaveimmor- tal Souls that are capable. 2. And futureas well as temporal death or mifery is thewages of fin. And that their fuffering is for fin , is undoubted , from Rom. g, &c And the Pelagian, fcarce deny but that Adam's fin caufed it. And if it be proved that they havemoral pravity, or fin of their own, then it is for their own fin. And if fo, it is their own punishment. All the doubt then is, Whether all Infants are forgiven. And for that i. We fee that the temporal punifhment is not forgiventhem. 2. We fee as loon as they come to anion, that to many at least, the forefaid penal defertion and privation of the Spirit of Sannification is not for- given them : And 3.. Without holiness none can fee God. 4. They that affirm it muff prove it : which they neither do, nor cando. There is no word of Scripture which telleth it us: How then should that be part of ourFaith, which is no part of Gods Word ? Ifyou fay that Chriff, being the fecondAdam, faveth the World from 11 the 'fin and mifery brought on them by the firít Adam; I anfwer; i.
