2.76 Church-Hitory of Difhops and General Council ended An. 879. in which but 102 Bifhops condemned Photius and felled Ignatius, by the means of the Emperor Bafilius and ° the Pope, who had before reftored him. Here in ACt. 2. The Bifhops that had followed Photius, took the old courfe, and when they law all turned cryed peccavimus and craved pardon, asd themfelves called Photius , fesch a villain as there had never been the like. (Bin. p. 882,) They faid they finned through fear and fo were forgiven. AcT. 3. Some Bifhops that had turned, who were ordained by Methodists, were re- quïred to fubfcribe to a form propofed; But they told them that the late times had fo vexed men with heinous fubfcriptions, that they had made a Covenant or Vow to make nomore fubfcriptions but what they a'-'? had done already, and the profeffion oftheir faith ( like Nonconform- ifts) and defired to be received on inch terms without their new fob- fcription. Photius himfelf, who would not enter till con- ßrained, and then profeffed as in imitation of Chrift to give them no anfwer to what they asked him; and is in vain exhorted to repentance. Aft, 6. Here Baflius the Emperor made a notable fpeech to exhort the Bifhops to repentance, offering himfelf to lay by his honour and to lie on the earth, and let them tread on him confeffing his fin, and asking mercy. A&. 7. Photius is again brought in, (and his ftaff that he leaned on ta- ken from him) and he denyed to defend himfelfand to repent, but bid them repent. The Bifhops of Heraclea, &c. rejected the Legates, and pronounced them anathematized that should anathematize Photius, and appealed to the Canons. A& 8. They cenfured a Bifhop that was againft Images. Aft. 9. They examined lathe great men that had (worn againft Ignatiss, who confeft they had fworn falfely for fear.of the Princes ; but Leo would not damn or curie Photius, becaufe tie thought the Orthodox were not to be curfed.
