(83) Propofition 4. It is the Scripture phrafe, and therefore ware rantable to fay, that By our words We thall be Yullified, and 6y your Words men 'hall be condemned. And that men 'hallbe judgedaccord- ing to their works : (e...ind to judge, is to juflifie or condemn ) And that a man is jullified by his Works, andnot by Faithonly ; 7am.2.24. I amnot now fpeaking ofthe fenfe of thefe texts, but of the wars rantablenefs of this langauage,as being ufed by the Floly-Ghoil. None therefore is to be charged with error for the meerufe of the words , unlefs it be proved that he ufeth them in an ill fenfe. Propofition 5. Yet, though it be Scripture phrafe, it fhould be ufed with great Caution ; and the very phrafe of Y uflification by Work!, fhould be avoided or exp'ained, where it may be an occa- lion of drawing men to afcribe too much to their works, or of offence to the godly : and we fhould more frequently ufe 'reads phrafe, (which is not contrary to this) and fay, that a man is jai- fied by Faith, without the works of the Law. All things are not convenient, that in themfelves are lawful. Propofition 6. I had rather my felfufe this phrafe , We pallbe finallypined, if We believe andfincerely obey ; which is all one as to fay , Faith and fincere Obedience are Conditions of our final 7uflification then this phrafe, we are jellified by works, and not by Faith only, for the forefaid reafons. And ifI underiland that the latter phrafe , though it be the Holy-Ghoits , is offenfive, I will avoid it fo be it I mayhave leave on necelfary occafion toufe thefe three phrafes , which all our Divines, fo far as I know, do allow. I. That fincere Obedience is a Condition of ourfinal abfolution in udgement, and of the Continuance of our jaflification here : Or if the term Condition, and Continuing be attentive (though me thinks they fhould not) I would confent to difufe them both ( except when by difpute we are driven to debate the Cafe , whether they may be ufed or no, or when I am urged to exprefs what phrafesI judge moil proper.) Inileadof Continuance of jullification, I would as willingly fay, It is the Condition of not-lofing our 7afti- fication ; and inilead of calling it a Condition , I am content to ufe the very words of Scripture, and fay , IfWe con ourfins, be is Faithful andjisfi toforgive, and if forgive men their trelpaffes, your heavenly Father willforgive you but ifyeforgive not , &c.
