This is the anfwer I confefs, of tome men, whole parts and worth one would think shouldpromite much better. They yield to, and maintain what I Paid before ; that we did fa- tisfie and merit in and by Chrift, and that God could not in Ju- ftice deny us preterit Abfolution or j uftification without any fur- ther pardon , ( except in the after Manifeftation of this to our confciences. ) But then they think this ad of Deputation, or change of the perfon is a fufficient pardon. Towhich I fay, 1. I didnot mention the exclufion of all pardon, in my Con- fequence ; but onlyof all pardon merited by ( hriPs death, or fa- tisfadion, or by any ad of obedience, which he is fuppofed to do in our perfons andwe in him. And according to this defperate Dodrine which I gain-fay, there can be no pardon merited for us by Chrift. For this change of the perfon, which is mentioned , was both naturally andmorally (according to their fuppofition) antecedent to Chrifts fatisfa,Con and merits:we are luppoted firft to be made or reputed one 'perfon with Chrift, and then to have fatisfied and merited in him : That is to be firit pardoned , and then to have fatisfied and merited. 2.
