( 395 ) Mudge by this story whether the moderate Papifts and Protestants differ fo far in the point of 'unification, as fome imagine. 3 3° Apier Lordof cfrrarchiflossn on Rev.20. pag. 242. Napier, By Works here, we are Judged and juftified ; and not by Faith only, as alfo 161,0.2, 24. teftifieth meaning here- by that of lively Faith, and of the good Works that followeth thereupon, man is Iuftified ; and not of that dead Faith that is by it felf alone without any good Works. Otherwife were the words of Paul, Rom. 3. 28. Exprefs contrary to this Text and to lames ; For 'Paul faith We are Ireified by Faith , Without the Worke of the Law ; That is to fay , Not without good Workswhatfoever, but meaning that we are jullified by livelyFaith, with fuch fmall good works as our weak nature will fuller that Faith to produce, although it be without the precife works that the Law requireth. And for confirmation of this in- terpretation and Union of thefe Texts, ye than find that both lames and Paul agree in divers places, that Faith without works is dead Faith, and ferveth nothing to !unification. And again they agree both, that all works, how good foever they feem, that proceed not from Faith, are evil. And fo it is all one to fay with Paul, we are juilifiedby fruitful Faith, or Faith that produceth good works , although not the works that the Law requireth ; Or to fay with Iames,or here with St, John, We are JuJli#ed by faithful Works Seeing a working Faith, and faithful works are infeparable, and none can have the one without the other. So for concludon, thefe works by the which herewe are Judged are to be elteemed good or evil, not in themfelves, or fo far as they fa- tisfie the Law ( for fowere all works evil, and imperfea ) but in fo far forth as they have or want Faith adjoyned with them, they arc accounted good or evil only.
