There is not a greater enemy to covetoufnefs and all other vices in the world, then Chrift, and the Gofpel, and Religion which theremen profefs. If then there fhould be covetous ones among them what's this to Religionwhich teacheth them to abhor it ? Will you blame the belt Phyfitian and remedies that men are lick, when there is no cure but by thofe remedies ? Will you blame cloathingor fire that men are cold ? Or eating and drinking , becaufe men do confume by fome difeafe ? I tell you all men naturally are worldlings ; and no man can be cured of that deadly difeafe, but only thofe that are cured by the religion which there men profefs. Q ueft. io. And' pray you tell me, I3oyou think,that the works in which they differ fromyou aregoodor bad ? Is it good or bad to hear Sermons and repeat them for the help of memory , to pray and praife God together,and to live in the Communion ofSaints, which in your Creed you profefs tobelieve. If you have the face tofay this is evil or needlefs , you accule Godhimfelf that bath fo oftencommanded it. If it be evil, its longof God that fo ur_ gently requireth it., and not of them : But if you dare not fay fo, but confefs it is good, why then do you not imitate them ? What ! will you forbear Good , becaufe others do Evil ? Will you fin againft God in one kind , if they do fo in another ? We defire you not to joyn with them in evil ? If they deceive, or lie, oropprefs, do not youdo fo : But will you therefore refufeyour duty to God ; and therefore defiroy your own fouls ? It is to God and not to them that your duty is necefl'ary. Its God that commandeth it, and God you owe it to : And will youabufe God and rob him, becaufeyou havehard conceitsof men ? Wilt you abufe him , becaufe you think they do ? And who is it that wilt have the lofsof thisbut your felves ? The Lord bath witnefled that without blind's none !hall fee God, Heb. 12. 14. And will you negle&an holy life, and Phut your felves out of heaven, and damn your own fouls, becaufeyou think profeffors are bad ? A wife courfe indeed. Starve your felves becaufe profeffors wear cloaks, and famifh your felves becaufe tiëÿufe to eat.
