2.36 The Crucifying of the world; unfearchable wonders of Love , and wonders of Iuffice, won- ders of Wifdom, and wonders of Power : Its the admirationof, Angels ; the {fudyof all Saints, to know the height, and breadth, and length, and depth ; and when they haveall done , they find that the Love of Chrift furpaffeth knowledge. As all other know- ledge of arts, creatures, languages is _nothing in comparifon of the knowledgeof a Crucified hriff ; foour ownknowledge is toonarrow to comprehend the greatnefs, and too dull to reach to the bottom of the myfferie , of this defign of the heavenly Love, Eph. 3.17,18, 9. When Chrift hath poled men and An- gels with wonders h our Redemption ; And when we have done nothing in it our felves , its eafietoperceive in whom we Ihould Glory. 2. Confider alto that it is Chriff that God hash advanced to this Glorj , and it is the magnifying of him that is defigned by God,and not of fuch as you. Its true, that he intendeth toGlorifie us with Chrift, and that in forne participationof his Glory : But that is not by aferibing merit , and power , andwifdom tò us, nor by praifingus for that which indeed we havenot : but it is by com- municating fome of theSpirit of Chrift unto us and letting us fee the gloryof our head ; Though we may fee the brightnefs of the Sun, and have the comfort of its raies, yet thatBoth not make usSuns our felves. So though we thanbe where Chrift is, and behold his Glory, z fohn 17.24. and exercife our felves in hiseternal praife ; yet all this is but a derived dignity, communi- cated to usby the afpe&of our Lord ; and therefore it will not be, our work to praifeour felves but him. Rev. 5.9. Him herb Godadvanced to be a Prince anda Savior, Ads 5.31. and made him head over all things to the Chords, Eph. t 22. and delivered all things into his hand, a Joh. z 3.and given himallpower in heaven andcarth,Mat.28.i8.& aname above everyaame, tbatat thename f Nefirs every knee!hallbow, Phil. 2.9,10. and to thisend he dyed, rofe and revived, that he might be Lord ofthe deadandofthe living, Rom. 14.9. So that the exalting of the Redeemer is a more principali end in the work of Redemption then oar exaltation , and inours we are paffive, receiting thedignitywhich fromhim iscommunicated tous ; butChrift withhis Father is the fountain andend, of hisown glory. 3.
