And in time thofe very words which fignified their raptures, were ufed by formal hypocrites without their zeal who firft expreft them ; and fo being mortified, and made dead Images and ufed but by rote, in a fenfelefs canting among the Papidls, and alfo forced upon others ; it is now become apoint of zeal to avoid them, and take them as unlawful, and it is a great reafon , becaufe they are in the Mafs-book : when the Mafs.book received them from the predeceffors ofmanyof thefe men that now refufe them : But though indeed the higheft expreffions of zeal and rapture, are molt lothfome when they are counterfeited and turned into a meer lifelefs form : Yet it is the privation of life which is the fault of the Image and not the thing as in it felt. Reftore the fame fpirit to thofe words, and they will be as good as they were at the beginning. I might inflance in molt of the popish fuper- f}itions, andThew you, that for the molt part, it was the godliell fort of people of that age, who at fiat did either fet them up, or that which did occafion them ; and that the hypocrite after made them his Religion , taking up the form without the life , and that upon this the godly of after ages didabhor them.
