1154 Fifthly, Ssperflition is the great dividing en- gine, which fatan ufeth to cut the Churches of Chrift intoSeas and pieces ; and confequently to ftir upparty again party , to the hating and perfectztingofone another : For while fome take that for Religion which is none; others will fee their errour and avoid it : And thus the divifion will lay the foundation of difputes and quarrels, of enmity and oppofition. For who can think that all theChurches &ould ever be fo blind and .fiavilh,as to takeup that as a part ofReligion,and a divine inf}itution, whichwas forged by thepri- vate fpirit of fome erroneous perfon of an over- heated brain. Sixthly, Laifly, Si/per/lition much difpleafeth God; and makethustinners,even in that, in which we think efpecially tohonour him. Math. 15.9. In vain do they worfhip me, teaching for doEiriner the commandements of men : Though God in mercy can diftinguifh between his own andours, and cloth not count the whole worship to be invain, where any degree of fuperftition is mixed ( For then moll zealous perfons were undone;) yet the fiuperfiicioua part of woríhip is alwayes in vain; and all the reft is made as vain, where that is the predominant and denominatingpart. Thusover- doing is undoing, and thus the fuperfhitious are (materially) righteome overmuch.
