2 2 6 The Life of Faith. forer.puniihmentfhail be be thought worthy, who bath done de fpiíght to the Spirit ofgrace, y. 29. Heb. 6. 4, g, 6. EphcC 4.30. Grieve not theholy Spirit of God, r Thef. g. 19. wench not the Spirit. Direct. zo. By this it hplain, that the Spirit worketh not on man as a dead thing, which bath no principle of alïivity in it felf; nor as on a naturafy neceffitated Agent, which bathsso[elf- determiningfaculty of will; but as on a living free felfdetermin- ing Agent, which bath duty of its own toperformfor the attaining of the end defired. Thofe thcrcfore that upon the pretence oftheSpirits doing all, and our doing nothingwithout him, will lye idle, and not do their parts with him, and fay that they wait for the motions of the Spirit, and that our endeavours will not further the end, doabufc the Spirit, and contradid themfclves ; feting the Spirits work is to fair us up tó endeavour, which when we refute to do, we difobcy, and drive againti the Spirit. Dirc6 . 21. Thoughfametimes the Spirit work fo effrcacioufly, at certainly to caufe the volition, or other effea which is moveth to ; yet fometiines it fo moveth, as procuretb not the effea, whenyet it gave manall thepower andhelp which was neceffary to the effetl ; becaufe that man failed of that endeavour ofhis own, which /hould ,&save concurred tothe effell, andwhich he wasable without more help to bave performed. That there is fuch effe&ual grace, As 9. and many Scri- ptures with our great experience tell us. That there is fuch sneer neceffary uneffe6ual grace pooble, and fometime in being, (which tome call fffficient grace) is undeniable in the cafe of Adam; who finned not for want of neceffary grace, without which he could not dootherwife. And todeny this, blotteth out all Chriflianity and Religion at one dafh. IBy all which it appeareth, that the work of the. Spirit is fuchon mans will, as that fometimes the stied is fufpendtd on our concurrence ; fo that though the Spirit be the total caufe of its ownproper effect, and of the adof man, in its owes place and bindofa&ion ; yet not ftsnply a total caufe, of mans ad or volition; but mans concurrence may be further re- quired to it, and may fail. ¡ Direr. a2t.
