Spiritual Peace and Comfort. i 8 have faith given us principally that we might be- lieve , and live by it in daily applications of Chrift We have repentance,that it might breakus off from fin and bring us back to God ; We have Love, that we might Love God and our Redeemer, his Saints, and Laws,and wages ; We have Zeal, that we might be quickned in all our holy duties : and we have obedience to keep us in the way ofour du- ty : The firft thing we have to do with thefe Graces, is to ufe them for thole holy ends which their nature Both exprefs : And then the difcern- ing of them that we may have Affurance fol- loweth after this both in time and dignity. 6. And it is a matter of far greater concernment to our Selves to feek after the obtaining of Chrift and Grace , then after the certain knowledge that we have them. Youmay be faved though you never get Affurance here, but you cannot be faved with out Chrift and Grace. God bath not made Af- furance the Condition of your falvation. It tends indeed exceedingly to your comfort , and a pre- tious mercy it is ; but your fafety lied] not on. it. It is better go forrowful and doubting to Heaven , then comfortably to hell. lrirft there- fore ask what is the Conditionof falvation and the way to it, and then look that you do your belt to perform it, and to go that way, and then try your performance in its feafon. 7. Befides, as it is a work offar greater moment, fo alto of quicker difpatch, to Believe and Love Chrift truly, then to get Affu. rance that you do truly Believe and Love him. You may believe immediately (by the help of Cods Grace :) but getting Aflurançe of it, may
