( í20 CHAP. XVI. That the Englifh DiocefaneGovernment Both change this office of a Presbyter of Gods infiitution into another (quantum in fe) ofhumane invention. I Come now to prove the Minorpropofition:of my Argument.; That the Diocefane Government depofeth theOffice of Presbyters which: God hath inllituted (as much as in them lieth ) By which limitation I mean, that if we would judge of the Power and Obliviiuu of Presbyters, as the Prelatical conflitution de fallo doth defcribe it, and not as God defcribeth it contrarily, we muff take it for another thing. For theproofof this it mull i. be confidered what is Effential to the office, and 2. _How fomewhatEffential is taken from them. I. And ..a. we grant (as before) that no Aáion whatfoever, as per- formed at the prefent, orfor force excepted feafon, is Effential to thePaftoral office : A man ceafeth not to be a Preacher or Paftor, as foon as the Sermon is done and he is out ofthe Church. -When a-tnan is alleep or in a ¡blarney, he endeth not his office: Noryet when -he is interrupted by bufinefs, ficknefs, or : perfecution. Yea, if he were fo lick, as to be fure never ..to exercife his office more, he keepeth the Title with refpeét to what he bath already done. 2. Yet Exercife as Intended and as the Relative end or Terminus ofthe Ob- ligation and Authority, is Effential to the Office: For when it is a Relation which we qúeftion, and that conilleth in Obligation and Authority, there is no doubt but it is ad aliquid, and is fpecified by the Allion or Exercifi to which anen areObliged andAuthorized. ( As a Judge, a Souldier, a Phyfìcian, are ) And it being a Calling which we (peak of, and that durante vita & capacitate, itmull be filch Allion as is intended to be Ordinary, and Confiant. He that ' Confenteth not to do the work of a Minister, and that for more than a trial or a prefent.occafion, and is- not Obliged and Arsthorized to that work, at lealt ftatedly as his intended ordinary courfe oflife, is no Minifler of Chrift : which =Paul well expreffeth by that, phrafe Rom. i. ,t. Separated to the Gofpel .of God. 3. As God-in creating man made himit his own Image, fo did Chriii in making Church Pallors : Therefore he faith, As my Fatherfens me, fofend I jeu; And he ,that"receivethyou receiveth me, and he that dfpifcth you dzfif tb -me,
