I2I) me, and him that fent me, Lupe r O. t6. And they are Embaffadaurs to be- feech men in bis name and ffead to be reconciled to God, z Cor.5.19,20. AndChrift himfelf is called the Angel of theCovenant, and the Apoflle and high Prielt of our Profetlion, and the Great Prophet, and the Bilhop of our Souls, and the good Shepherd, and the great Shepherd or Pallor of the flock, and the Minifter of the Circumcition : And . he was a Preacher of the fame word of life as we are : And he adminiftred the fame Sacrament of Communion as we do. Now as the Office ofChrift had thefe three Effential parts, viz. to be the Teacher, the HighPrieff, and the Ruler of theChurch ; fo bath (not only the Apófiles, but ) every true Pallor in his place (as is proved. ) this threefold fubferviency to Chrilt. a. They will confefs themfelves, that He is no true Pallor who bath not Authority and Obligation -( which let together are called a Commion) to be a Teacher of the Church. For though fome men may be fo weak as that they can Teach but by Reading, Catechizing, Conference, or very (hort defeûive immethodical Sermons : And though where a Church hath Many, the Ableft may be the ufual publick Preachers, and the tell be but his affiflants : Yet I never found anyproof of Elders that were not Teachers by office as well as Rulers, and had not. Commifiion to Teach the flock ac- cording to their abilities, and might not Preach as the need of the Church required it, however the weaker may give place to the abler in the exercife of his office. Becaufe his office is an Obligation and Authority to exercife his Gifts as they are, for theChurches greateft edification. 2. And it willbe confeffed that he is noMinifler orPallor who is not Cotn- milìioned byChrift to be the Churches Guide inpublick Worship, in Prayer, praife, and Sacrament ofCommunion: However where there are many, all cannot officiate at once. 3. Therefore all the doubt remaineth whether the power of the Keys for ' Church Government, loch as belongeth to Paflors, be not as Efential as the tell ; I fay the Commiffion, the Authority, and the Obligation, ( though violence may much hinder theexercife) And this I have proved before and mitt not flay to repeat it. Only a. God dpth not diflinguith, when he giveth them the Keys and office. Thereforewe muff not dillinguifh. 2. The very fig- nification of the words [ Keys, Paffor, Presbyter, Overfeer, Steward, &c.] do not only import this Guiding, Ruling power, but notably fignifie it, as moll think more notably than the Ítrorfhipping part oftheir office. 3. Dr. Hammond and all ofhis mindconfefs that in Scripture thefe wordsare applyed to no one perfon or office, that had not the Governing as well as the Teaching and Worlhipping power. 4. The truth is, the Teaching, and Ru- ling, and Worthipping power, are infeparably twilled together. Ruling is' done ( not by the fword here, bur) in a Teaching way by the Word: As a Phyfician may a. read a Leéture of health to his Patients, z. and give every one particular direc`lions for his own cure ; and this Taft is called Go- verning them : So when the fame Pallor who Teacheth all generally by Sermons, doth make his applications to mens petfons and. cafes particularly, Q. it
