(I37) r. That which the Apoftles did in execution ofa Commifiion ofChrift, foe which he promifed and gave them his infallible Spirit, was the work of Unlit himfelf and the Spirit, A not to bechanged butbyan Authority equal tothat which did it. But fuch was the feeling ofthe fpecies ofChurches and Elders. Ergo &c. The Commiflionisbefore recited fromScripture, and fo is thepromife and gift of the Spirit to perform it. a. Where there is full proof of a Divine Inftitution by the Apofiles, and noproofofa purpofe that men fhould afterward change it, or that this in- ftitution thould be but for a time, and then ceafe ; there...that Inflitution is to be fuppofed toRand in force, and the repeal, ceffation, or allowed muta- tion tobe feigned, But there is full proofof a Divineinflitutionby the Apo- files that Preesbyterswith the power of Government were placed over tingle Churches ( and no other faith Dr. H.) And there is no proof brought us at all, of either Repeal, Ceffation, or Allowance.for mutation--Ergo &c. - -They confefs de fallo all that we delire, viz. ,r. That there was then none but jingle ohterdcr or Congregations under one Bifhop. 2. That there were no Subpresbyters. Let them now prove the Allowance of a Change. 3. That fuppofition is not tobegranted which leaveth nothing fure in the Chriftian Churches and Religion: But fuch is the fuppofitionofachange of the Apofiles Orders in thefe points. Ergo. Ifthe after times may change thefe Orders, who can prove that they maynot change all things elfe offupernatural inftitution? As the Lords day, Baptifm, theLords Supper, theBible, the Miniftry yetremaining, &c. And if fo,nothing is fure. Object. Chriff himfelf inffituted thefe, and therefore they may not be chan- ged. Anfm r. It was not Chrift himfelf that wrote theScripture, but his fer- vanes by his Spirit. 2. Chrift himfelfdid that mediately which his Apoftles did by his Mandate and Spirit. Matth. 28. ao. The Spirit was given them to bring all things to their remembrance which he had fpoken to them. And tò caufe them to Teach the Churches all things which Chrift had commanded them. And as Chrift made the Sin againft the Holy Ghoft to be greater than that which was but directly againft his humanity, and as he promifedhis Difciples that by that Spirit they thould do greater works than his,fo that which hisSpirit in them dideftablifh, was ofno lefsauthority, than if Chrift.had,per- fonally eftablifhed it. 4. By this rule the Prelates themfelves may be yet taken down by as good authority as the Apoftles .other fettlement was çhanged : For ifit was done by Humane Authority, there is yet as great Humane power tomake that further change: Wherever they, place it, in Kings, Bithops, or Councils, theymay yet put ,down : Bithops, by as good authority as they put down what the Apoftles.fetup.; and may fet up more new orders frill, by as good. autho- S . rity
