Nor is it the Ethical Liberty of the foul from fin by gracious Habits : for thisis ever good, as was faid before. Nor is it a Political Liberty from thofe tyrannous Laws or practices of men that would root out the Gofpel and pull down the Kingdom of Chrift, and fet up iniquity. ThisLiberty muft be defired, and not de- nied, even when we fubmit our felves to perfecution : but it is 1. The Civil Liberty of being from under the Government of others, and of having a hand in Government our felves. 2. The Liberty of being from under the Government of Strangers, Conquerors, or enemies. 3 . The Liberty of choofing our own Governors, and having themnot by other mens electi- on fet over us. 4. ALiberty from burdenfom payments and taxes which are of no neceffity to our good. 5. A liberty from arbitrary Government, and from being lyable to the meer will and paffions of men. 6. A protedion from the abufes and injuries of others. 7. And a liberty for our bo- dies from the reftraint of Imprifonment. All thefe are things that in themfelves are naturallygood ; and fpecially the two laft are very great mercies. But yet as the five first are fmaller matters, fo all of them are but temporal tranfitory things, and not tobe regarded in comparifon of Chrift and the hea- venly liberties. The deareft of them muft be Denied when they nand in the wayof duty, and cannot be had on terms of innocency. To fin for liberty is to leap out of the frying pan into the fire, as the Proverb is : Tobecome the prifoner of the Devil, that we may not be the prifoners of men : to enflave the foul for the liberty of the body. Believe it, fin makes deeper galls then bolts or fcourges do : Its an eafie durance to lie in goal in comparifon of lying in fin, or under the wrath of God. At the furtheft, death will free you from nu- prifonment , but death alone will not freeyou from fin.
