Thematter objefted'may eafilybe anfwered;. ifthefe two things be remembred. Firft, thatwhen thewords of know. ledge doe together by connotationimply affeetion, much more doe the words of beleefe, and Ergo, where .I findtobeleeve that Chrift is the Sonne ofGod, I muft conceive this beleefe, to contain confidence in the Sonne. Secondly, to remember that whenfaithpfany temporary promife is faid tobe accounted for righteoufneffe, it is becaufe it doth inbeleeving the thing temporal, apprehend him inwhom all the pro- mifes areyea, and Amen ; who is at leaft the temoved objeét ofa juftify. ing faith inevery thing itapprehendeth. Thus Abraham beleeving the promife offeede ofFfaac, did apprehend that bleffed feede whichhad from the beginning beene promifed, and faw his day, which the Apo- file doth teftifie, Gal.3.Neither didhe lookeat the powerof God,but to fuftaine his beleefe of a feede before promifed, againft the tempta- tions wherewith God did exercifehim ; that wehave a particular word, and in effecttobeleeve on Chrift unto forgiveneffe of our finnes,I have ¡hewed above. Wherefore let us reft on Chrift aloneas our rocke, flye to him as our truefanftuary. This Papifts come to in death, renouncing any confidence in their fooleries;thisthemfelves giveteftimony únto, that it isthe fureft; and he is not wife whowill nottake the fafeft way for his foules falvati- on. Thethird Doctrineis, that faith and love are never difjoyned, but got each inhand one with the other: From whattime we beleeve, menwill doe any great good things for us,we feede a love arifetoward them : fo from what time by faith we apprehend love in God towardus through Chrift,we feede love refleéting from ustowardhim ; according to that, We love him, becaufe we haveknowne and beleevedhis love to us:Firft, faith mutt bring the holy fireof Gods love into our frozen hearts, or they will never be warmed with fervent love to God againe: The fin- full foule doth fee Gods love forgiving itmany finnes, then it loveth muchagaine. In naturewe fee nothing canmove in defireto this or that, till firft it hath apprehended it lovely : So our affections cannot in love and defire move to, and unite themfelves with God,till by faith wedoe difcerne him asreconciled tous, and fo becomming an amiableobjeét for us finncrs to embrace ; till that faith difcerneth this, nothing but wrath, like a confuming fire, abidethoverus.Hence it is that Saint Paul, e Tim.maketh to flow from faith unfained ; and Gal.5. he faith, thatfaith worketh bylove, not as fire makethhot bybeate, which is a for- mall property inherent in it; but as the foule doth thisor thatby the hand, which is an externe inftrument conjoyned unto it : for love is not any effentiall caufe which doth give being to faith, but it is a grace with- out thebeingoffaith, though joyned unto, bywhich, as an inftrument, faith worketh. The Ufeof thisDoctrine is, to fhew how unjuftly they flanderus as teaching a faith alone without other graces; when we hold according to
