For hence it is, that Gods mercie and juftice kiffe (of- fering no violence to each other) becaufe God doth fo of grace fave us, (tanners in our felves) that firft he maketh us (through Chrift ap. plyed) righteous , and worthy falvation , worthy in regard of his juif acceptation. Whereas the Lord doth fo junifie us ofgrace, that we are alfo made juft in the redemption of Chrift; we may feeand contemplate that admirable myferie, how the Lords juftice and mercie fhould ac- cord in one. There is all juftice untoChrin, whofefoul felt the anger of God in that extremity, that hisbody (affeCted therewith) did fweatdotty, blood, who was broken even with hellifh torment by the hand of God for our fins, and was humbled to the death of the croffe. There is all mercie to us; it is mercie that the fatisfaltion of Chrift fhould be ours, that all he did , fhould be accounted as done by our felves. It is mercie, that Chrift himfclf the fatisfier, fhould begiven us, faith Paul,Rom.8.3z. He hath gratified us with his Son, he hath benowed him freely on us. Nowwe will, for our more fruitfull confideringof the Point, fet down thefe four things : r. What is the AQof Faith. 2. What is the Subje& in which it is. 3. What Objedt it hath. 4. What Properties. Firft, for the AEt of Faith , it ftandeth in thefe two things; Knowledge, and Apprehenfron. Faith therefore is by a Synecdoche called Knowledge, By his knowledge Jimamy righteous fervant jufifte many, Ifa. 53.
