Now Chrift bath put an end toall thefe wars, at his coming all are hufht, and peace made on all hands. I. He hath reconciled us to God, z Car.5.19. Rom.5.I. But it may be objedted, &l3, what Chrift faith, He came not to fend peace, but a fword. This doth nor makeany thing againft it, That he as the ,flhor,r peace : For the fame peace is not underftood in both thefe places; He came not tofendpeace, that is, carnall peace; he is the Author onelyof fpirituall peace. Secondly,it is objelled,that the Elate ofthe Jews,to whomhe came, was turbulent, full of tumult, till they were fubverted. True, the ftate of the Temple and Jews was rroublefome; but fo, that the world could not take away this peace , My peace Igive unto you, and none flail take it from you, Joh. 16.22. Thirdly, it is objeéted, that we finde in our felves , finde wecame to be in him, more difquietncffe then we ever tailed before. To which I anfwer, what we finde in the world,we muff look for; in the worldye flail haveaffliilion: And what we finde in our felves, taketh away the feeling of peace, not peace it feif; like as in juggling, things remain unaltered, though our fenfe is corrupted. Secondly, he is an Author of peace, but applyeth it fucceffively by degrees : Like matter, like man; like Prince, like people : Chrift for a while indured many and great troubles, and fo mutt his members.
