78 Ob¡eCi. Anfw. The Covenant of Works Chap.12 And whereas fome fay that being freed from death, upon that very account rvereigne in life, and therefore in cafe hit fufferings deliver to from death, they neceffarily conferre upon to life, there it not, nor can there be conceived any medium between them. I anfwer, It is true of our natural life and death , a man not dead, is alive. But taking death in Scipture-fenfe for the wages of fin, which comprizes (as we have heard) all mifery , and life for an immarceßible crown of glory, there may he a medium con- ceived between them, and is. not only conceived, but afligned by Papifts in their Limbge infantum. Neither will it ferve to fay that Chrifh active obedience, ferved only for a qualification to fit him for the work of fuffering : none but innocent man free from fin, could be a facrifice fot fia, feeing Chrift had been in- nocent, though he had never come under the Law, to have yeeld- ed that obedience. His perfon had tot been as ours under the Law, unleffe of his own accord he b.''d been made under the Law, Gal, q.. 4. Somewhat might be faid for the fubjedion of the hu. mane nature in Chrift, the manhood of Chrift, which was a crea- ture, but the perfon of Chrift God -man, feemes to be above fub- jedion. Much may be laid for the fubjedion of the Sonne of David, fo confìdered, he may fay with David, 1 am thy fervant, and the fonne of thy hand-maid, but not fo of the Lord of David, had he not for our fakes made himfelf a fervant ; we know the mortality of the humane nature, yet Chrift had never died un- leffe he had made himfelf obedient unto death , neither needed he to have ferved unleffe he had humbled himfelf, Phil. 2. to take upon him the forme of a fervant. See the Confeflion of Faith, agreed upon by the AiTembly of Divines, chap. sjea. 5. and Dr. Featlies fpeeches upon it, Fourthly, This righteoufnefe of C'hrill, Whether pafve or aliive, or both pave and aE ive, is made ours by faith. This is our way of intereft and appropriation of it to our felves, faith and no o- ther grace, this grace and no other Gofpel-work gives us title; and therefore as it is called the righteou/ìrtele of God , fo allo the righteoufneffè offaith;T'hefetwo are promifcuo, ifly ufed and taken for one another Korn o 7, 4.
