Chap.12. and the Covenant ofGrace. 79 wrought by us, or inherent in us, called the righteoufneffe of faith, not of works, not of love, not of patience, or meekneffe, it is alone faith, and none of thefe graces that puts out it felf to receive ir. ; love in a gracioufly difpofed foul, cleaves to Chrift for conun.Anion, but receives him not for ¡unification, Thefe two Rand as relatives, there is no foul entitled to this righteouf- neffe, but by faith, and faith is it that entitles to it; and that foul hath intereft in it ; Therefore ¡unification in Scripture is afcri- bed to faith, and denied to works, when neither faith nor works can beare us out of themfelves before the tribunal of God , but faith rakes hold, and the foul by faith refts on this righteoufneffe ofgrace, which the Gofpel tenders. It is true, that faith receives the Spirit as well as it receives the bloud of Chrift, john 7. 39, Gal. 3. 14, But this is for another ufe, for the work of fant}ifica- tion inherent, not ¡unification by righteoufneffe imputed. And it is also true, that faith accepts Chrift as a Lord as well as a Sa- viour: But it is the acceptation of him as a Saviour, not as a Lord that ¡unifies ; Chrift rules his people as a King, teacheth them as a Prophet, but makes atonement for them only as a Prieft, by giving himfelf in facrifice, his bloud for remiflion of fins; Thefe mutt be diftinguiíhed, but not divided, faith hath an eye at all, the bloud of Chrift, the command of Chrift the Doane of Chrift, but as it ties and fattens on his bloud, fo it ¡unifies. He is fet out a propitiation through faith in his blond, Rom, 3.24. not through faith in his command, It N the blond of Chri(t that cleanfeth all fin, and not the Sovereignty of Chr; t. Thefe con- futons of the diftinc`t parts of Chrifts Mediatourihip and the feverall offices of faith may not be fuffered. Scripture aüìgnes each its particular place and work. Sovereignty doth not cleanfe us, nor doth bloud command us; faith in his bloud not faith yeelding to his Sovereignty doth juftifie us, There are feveral as of juftifying faith, Heb. 11. But thofe are not acts of ¡unifica- tion ; ,1t is not Abrahams obedience, CA'Zofes felf- denial, Gideon or Sampfon.r valour that was their ¡unification. but his Moud who did enable them in thefe duties, by his Spirit. Paul went in thefe duties as high as they, living in more clear light, and under more abundant grace, I doubt not but he out -topt them, and yet he was not thereby ¡unified, as t Cor q. 4. lamer iaideed faith, that B6rabarnwas juftified by works, when he had offered Ifaac hit fon ova. The acceptati. on of Chrift as a Lord, Both not juftifie.
