Chap.! 5 . and the Covenant of Grace. themfelves, and make it theirwork to deceive others. They nei- ther know fin, nor the direful guilt of it nor yet God, nor his direful! difpleafure againff it. The Apoítle makes it his buff- nefle to undeceive them, as Ephef. S . 6.- when having reckoned up a catalogue of fins , he thus fpeaks ; Be not deceived with vaine words far becaufe of thefe things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of dsfobedience. Neither is there any change (accord- ing to this Doctrine) fuppofedin God. The Wrath of God is re tiealed againff all unrighteoufneffeof men, Rom. i, 18. The change is in them that Covenant againit it and walk in it. Did they know the terrour of it they would tremble at the thought of running upon the mouth of it, and by heaping up fin to t ea- fureap Wrath again It the day of Wrath, and revelation of the righte- our Jtadgements of.' god, Rom. 2.5. They will finde this an aggre- gate of all miferies and let them take heed that they call not to the rocks and mountains to hide them from it. The Pofitive part is to be followed , as the Privative part to be fhunned. As Timothy muff flee covetoufne ffe, fo he mull follow after righteoufne f fe godline f fe faith , love , patience, meekneffe, r Tim. 6. i i. (Faith in the former place as an inftrument fervice- able for our acceffe to God , makes up (as we heard) a conditi- on of it felf; As a work or inherent grace , it is here comprifed in this Covenant - condition, together with others, to hold up our communion with God.) As we mug ceafe to do evil fo we mull learne to dowel' ; As we muff put off the old manwith his deeds, fo we mull put on the new man. It is not enough not to bring evil fruit, wilde grapes; but we muff be fruitful in every good work. God bath a quarrel with his people upon a charge of negatives, as well as affirmatives ; omifiions , as well as commiifions. She obeyed not the voice, the received not correction, fhhe truftied not in the Lord, fbe drew not neer to her God, Zeph. 3.2. We muff not alone be free from that charge of Chrift upon the f ewes , of doing the work of the Petit, John 8.44. but we mull. abound in the work of the Lord, I. Cor. 15. 5 8. And this upon the penalty mentioned in the former branch ; Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit,, (ball be hewen doge and café into the fire, Matth. 3. ro. upon thefe terms it is, that we avoid the curfe of the Covenant. Thofe on whom no condemnation is charged 'walk not after the flefb, but after the Spirit and the fruit of the Spirit is love ioJ', peace, OZ long- 99 Ì z.'Politive. A return to God , and an holy walking with him.,
