2 16 The Oldand New Covenant. Chap.29, cording to the Covenant that l made with their fathers , in the day that I took, them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; Which my Covenant they brake, although 1 was an hufband to them, faith the Lord. But this fhall be my Covenant that 1 will make with the houfe of Ifrael; after thole dayes faith the Lord , 1 will put my Law in their inward parts and Write it in their hearts ; and Will be their God, and they fhall be my people. Here is a third purpofe or intereft for which this Text is produced to ferve. The firff was to affert an unconditionate Covenant in the dayes of the Golpe! ( which we examined chapter E.) when the Gófpel expreffely holds out Covenant- conditions, more expreffely then the Covenant of Works, which is-confeft to be conditional. The fecond to overthrow a pub - lick Miniflery , and all private mutual exhortation ( which we fpake to chapter 17. ) when the New Teftament Both eftablifh, both. And to let up this Prophecie in a third particular a- gaintE all New Teftament- light; None mutt be of the called of God into Covenant , for fruition of Church- priviledges, but thofe that are Regenerate : Men in Old Teftament- Covenant, broke Covenant as is there expreft ; Men in the New Covenant (hall keep Covenant , and thefe are only the Elea and Regene- rate. When New Teftament- Scriptures cleerly and unanimoufly hold it out in that latitude to comprehend thofe that are tranf- greffours of it , no more then it mutt be brought ( though there be like colour for both) to overthrow Gofpel-Ordinances, pri- vate and publick exhortations , when in the New Teftament there is a cleere and full eftablifhment of them. There are thofe that are in the Faith (fo farce as to enter Covenant,) That make fhipWrack of the Faith, I Tim.1.19. Dif- ciples of Chrift, that go back and walkno more with him; Men fan - etified by the blood of the Covenant, that tread under foot the blood of the Son of God, and do deJ ight to the Spirit of grace, Heb. o. 29. There are that e/cape the pollution of the world , through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jefus Chriji , and are again entangPcd and overcome. Thofe that have known the way Hof righteoufne fe, that turne from the holy Commandment. To Whom
