Chap. 3o. The Old and New Covenant. I9 CHAP. XXX. Interest in a .Church fiate is of equal latitude with the Covenant.. 1-Ten it follows by way of neceffary corollary, that Church- '. memberfhip intereft in a Church-flate is aqua! latitude; not only the elec`f and regenerate, but all in Covenant (as before fpoken to) have their right, ffand intitled to Church - priviledges. And here left I fhould be miflaken, let me explaine my felfe ; that my meaning is not ipfo fac`lo, becaufe in Covenant with God, and called by his name, to entitle them to the Church invifible, and fo to fuppofe them lively members, living in grace by influence of the Spirit from Chrif}; this would clearely I enough contradict that which before I have fpoken, and were indeed a contradiction in the adjed, I mean it of a vifible Church -Elate , and intereft in vifible priviledges. If any quar- rei at the diflinction, as fome have done on either hand , en- deavouring to take off both members ; The Church of Rome not admitting any Church invifible, and others not brooking any Church but fuch as confiffs of invifible members as may appeare in their definitions of a particular Church, putting in thofe claufes, that belong onely to the Church invifible: I fhall referre them to Dolor John Reynolds, in his fecond The fats ful- ly bottoming it on that text Mat. az. 14. Many Are called, but few chafen which yet muff be confeff with judicious Mailer Hudfon, that it is not a divifion into two diflinct Churches, or fpecies, of Churches, but a diftribution of the fubjecl by the ad'uncis, viz. duplici modocommunioni',externo & interno,Vindi- caion , pag. 4. One and the fame Church bath members of a vifible, and invifible notion, a more full explanation may there be feene. This being premifed, I afrme, that intereft in Church - memberfhip in a vifible Church.ffate is theirs, and may be claimed by all thofe that have intereft in the Covenant before named,an external intereff,or anintereft in the externalCovenant, as ufually it bath been called. This is a lure rul e,wheie the Covenant is, there the Church U; and in what latitude foever men are ta- ken into Covenant, they are received into the Church.
