. MEMOIRS OP PERIOD XI. ova of the firft jurors, yet now for many years kept his integrity m other things. He was a faithful, ferious, and moving acher, having a great infìght into the doLrine of the gofpel ; udicious, pious man, endowed with an uncommon meafure a ingenuity. Every day thereafter, till Friday; my ftudy-day; II was obliged to ride, on occauiou of my work in the parith. /On Saturday, I wrote the letters already mentioned. I was re- folved alfo to have fent Mr G. as he had defired a copy of the Everlafting Efpoufals, and of the Myftery of Chrift in the form of a fervant : but calling for the former in the houlè, found one copy was lent away, and another could not be fallen on ; which I embraced as a providential (top to the defign he had in view, which was to get fome perfon of note there to recommend them, and fo to print them over again there ; thus to bring me ac- quainted in England. And having, on the Monday, prepared my fermon for the thankfgivìngon Wednefday the 26th, I had no opportunity till this day, Nov. 25. to review matters fence my return from Maxton. The Sabbath dayywas exceeding bad ; fò that I could hardly be fure to get the notice of the thankf- giving through thevarifh timely. But the Lord heard prayer and pitied, and gave a comfortable day and Meetingon Wed- nefday. Adam Linton in Brodgerhill, his wife, and fon, being all to- gether in great diftref, and I being concerned for them both in public and private, I feat them word, that I would wilingly 'vifit them, if it might be accepted, they being followers of Mr Macmillan. But word was returned me, that it could not he accepted on any intreaties. Now Adam himfelf is deceafed. But there people will neither live nor die with us. O my foul, come not thou into their fecret in the matter of church commu- nion ! unto their affembly, mine honour, be not thou united, in point of feparation ! In purfuit of my former defign, I did on Nov. 27. prepare, and on the. 28th draw up, a memorial for my wife, in cafe of her furviving me, concerning 'the afï'ignation ; and fórne direc- tions relative to my dead body. And that very night the re- parations of the manfe, which had been begun by the mafons, and carried on by the (later, were completed by the wright. The meeting together of fo many various events of a different afpe& about this time, made a ftrange conjunéture, confirming, in that I was called to make ready for my removal, and yet ftill to be doing till my Lord bid me ftop. As for the ftate of my body, my teeth remained in number as before, but lefs ufeful. For much of a year I read my chapters in the morning with pre- ferves: but hitherto have not made ordinary tire of them other- wife. However, I think Í find my eyes begin to fail fenfibly. Neverthelefs I have ordinarily this feafon read fomething every night ; finding myfelf in;better cafe for it than fome years be- fore. Particularly I am reading over the effay on the Hebrew.
